摘要:
Among a number of mental health needs is that of additional manpower for providing traditional counseling/psychotherapeutic services. An intramural NIMH pilot training program, conducted by Rioch, aimed at this problem through the training of mature, bright, socially sensitive women who had raised families of their own. The women so trained have been employed in various mental health settings over the past three years. The results of this program have been under continuous study during this three‐year period. Methods of study have included inventories, tapes, and ratings. Considerable weight was given to evaluations by supervisors and by co‐workers in the various agencies. This investigation of 132 University of Illinois undergraduate women who indicated that they were planning either for a career or homemaking role had three purposes: (a) to cross‐validate Hoyt and Kennedy's findings of the measured interests of career and homemaking oriented women; (b) to compare the general values of the two groups; and, (c) to discover differentiated patterns of values and interests. Statistically significant results were: career oriented women higher on the Study of Values theoretical, and Strong Vocational Interest Blank lawyer, psychologist, and physician scales; homemaking oriented women higher on the religious, housewife, home economics teacher, and dietician scales. Identification patterns of male and female children (110 boys and 114 girls) in grades one through five were studied by two methods that have been used in “identification research”; identification inferred from sex‐appropriate and sex‐inappropriate games, preferences and identification inferred from profile congruence between “self,” “mother,” and “father” concepts on a semantic differential (SD). Results showed that the two measures are meaningfully related as “self” rating scales; however, there was no apparent association between the Games and Activities Inventory (GAI) (games preferences) and the SD as indicators of identification. An attempt was made to replicate an American study in Australia. In the Australian study, the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule was administered to 203 students who were later differentiated as 30 male and 72 female Australian study, the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule was adminis‐achievement was related to needs for achievement and persistence, whereas nonachievement was associated with needs for affiliation, nurturance, and change. For males, achievement was related to deference, whereas non‐achievement was associated with heterosexual needs. In general, successful students were characterized by needs for order and endurance; unsuccessful students by needs for change, heterosexuality, and aggression. Factual and subjective data gathered from counseling centers in 36 major universities is presented to show present conditions, emphasis, and needs of the future. Data are presented showing ratios of counselors to students, budget allotments, strengths, specific weaknesses, etc. Counseling facilities, services provided, emphasis, communications and plans for expansion are dealt with individually. Less than half the centers were meeting student needs and a majority indicated a shortage of professional staff, particularly those competent to do personal adjustment counseling.

摘要:
This article represents an attempt to provide an adequate theoretical basis for the development of guidance programs. Three important questions essential to any planning of guidance programs are discussed: (1) scope of responsibility, (2) developmental timing, and (3) focus of guidance activity. A model is proposed in an attempt to conceptualize the relationship between these three important questions of emphasis. The basic problem of the purpose of guidance programs is discussed, and a proposal relevant to the model and the assumed purposes is made. The proposed objective focuses on the environment of the learner, in an effort to prepare him to actively and effectively appropriate and apply new knowledge and skills. The implications that such an objective has for the role of the guidance specialist, as well as for education in general, are discussed.

The scores of 321 college freshmen on the Reading Versatility Test and the Adjective Check List were analyzed in an attempt to identify personality characteristics that are related to quality and/or rate of reading. The results of the study indicate that such relationships exist. High‐rate efficient and effective readers characterize themselves as possessing a high degree of personality characteristics considered desirable for good adjustment and achievement in college and the world of work, and a low degree of those characteristics considered undesirable for adjustment and achievement; low‐rate ineffective readers characterize themselves as possessing the opposite degree of these characteristics. The other subgroups considered tended to be more like the low‐rate ineffective readers than like the high‐rate effective and efficient readers.
