Pathological motives for power over peers wear many masks. The power‐oriented personality with a conflicting dependency need attempts to secure and maintain leadership status as an ego‐defensive measure. However, his exaggerated love‐dependent need conflicts with his need to be so powerful that none dare attack him. Etiological factors include early experiences of fear and humiliation, repressed hostility, and a determination to dominate others. When he is opposed by his followers, such a student leader resorts to character assassin techniques among others. This article, concerning school guidance theory and practice, has as its central theme the idea that school counselors may be able greatly to enrich their services to students by investing themselves in a study of theinteractionsbetween a student and his learning environments. Evidence is reviewed concerning the relative influences upon educational outcomes of (1) the individual's characteristics, (2) the home and family circumstances, (3) school characteristics, and (4) peer relationships. Guidance practice is examined within their context and implications are suggested.

Recent legislation in the manpower area provides programs to increase employability of unemployed and underemployed workers through training. The U.S. Employment Service has important responsibilities with regard to counseling and selection of candidates for training. Reports of action taken by 95 sets of parents of high school seniors to assist their childrens' development that resulted directly from parent‐counselor conferences were obtained and examined. The conferences had been held annually over the three‐year period of the students' attendance at high school. Parents' reports were compared with those obtained from the students by use of parallel report forms in a manner that prevented previous discussion of the questions. The evidence from parents' and students' reports suggested that when counselors knew the students well enough to offer specific recommendations for parental consideration (especially about reading habits and planning for further education, and particularly to college‐educated parents) they were most effective in stimulating a

Five potential determinants of career selection were investigated for vice‐presidential level business executives: time of decision to enter a business career; significance of personal influences in career choice; importance of family socio‐economic status; role of personal values; and effect of long‐range goals as they relate to choice of career. Personal interviews were conducted with 102 executives meeting four selection criteria. The total sample was divided into three subgroups based on each respondent's function in the company to reveal intra‐occupational differences in career selection. 96 professors at the University of Wisconsin and 66 professors at 9 European universities were asked when and why they had selected the general and specialized fields of their work. The replies by all the groups of subjects were quite similar. Careers had been chosen largely during the university years and later. Although changes in career interests had been common, the humanists and social scientists had settled on their general and specialized fields later than had the natural scientists. The major factor in career choice, especially among the physical scientists, had been a self‐generated and absorbing interest. Most of the recent stimulating discussion on use of the computer in testing has been concerned with more rapid scoring, better recording, and such advances as Eber's programming of the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16 PF) and Swenson's of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) to give verbal, descriptive printouts, etc. These are valuable, but as we go beyond statistical into psychological, lawful prediction, computer use assumes a deeper significance in (a) exposing faulty implicit assumptions and procedures in diagnosis and treatment and (b) making available for the individual case stored psychological experience and the rapid derivation of results of complex prediction beyond the resources of the individual practitioner. Possibilities of supervising counseling practicum students through small group meetings are described. Some of the challenges, problems, and opportunities involved are delineated. Certain behavior of the supervisor in managing group discussion and interaction can be viewed in terms of 4 possible areas or subjects of focus: the training agency (practicum), the clients being counseled by practicum students, the students themselves, and the dynamics and development of the supervisory group. Many opportunities are available for broadening or narrowing the focus, and thus the context, of discussions of issues arising in the group. Examples are presented from a single group supervisory session.

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the congruence of self and ideal‐self utilizing a Q‐sort and occupational choices made by potential four‐year college students and potential junior college terminal students. To determine if there was a significant difference between the means of Q‐sort scores for the groups, t's were calculated. The chi‐square test of significance between the groups in their selection of realistic occupational goals indicated that a significantly greater number of the four‐year college groups selected realistic occupational goals, .01 level. A greater number of subjects selected occupational goals above their aptitude level and in inappropriate occupational areas than the number of subjects who chose occupations below their apt

This paper presents the results of five studies with four groups of female students, those intending to enter occupational therapy, physical therapy, medical technology, and “others” who were interested generally in health and rehabilitation professions. No discrimination could be made among the four groups on the basis of personality, attitudinal, and basic abilities variables. Significant differences were observed, however, on the Florida Placement Examination with prospective physical therapy students somewhat low on the natural and social science scales. Significant differences were determined, also, with the Strong Vocational Interest Blank. Medical technologists were low on factors that contained nontechnical vocations requiring a good deal of interaction with people; physical therapists were low on the artist‐author‐librarian factor but high on the physical education teacher scales.
