In reviewing the history of the development of techniques of work evaluation, four different approaches are appraised: (1) the mental testing approach, (2) the job analysis approach, (3) the work‐sample approach, and (4) the situational assessment approach. Each of these sets of methods is found to arise from somewhat different sectors of society, to serve differing interests, and to have differing objectives. 摘要:
The counselor is involved in the curriculum structure of high school because of the amount of time he spends in educational planning with students. His record of participation in curriculum change has been poor. Educational counseling has consisted of adjusting the student to the curriculum that exists, rather than working for curriculum change that can benefit all levels of students. Curriculum resources should be thought of in a broad sense of not only formal courses and units but also extracurricular activities both in and out of school. The counselor is stationed at the crossroads of student and community needs. What is he doing to help integrate these needs through continual curriculum revision?

摘要:
The Research and Guidance Laboratory for Superior Students was organized at the University of Wisconsin in 1957 to conduct longitudinal research‐through‐service for superior high school students. It currently involves 2,000 young people from 75 Wisconsin secondary schools. Each year faculties of cooperating schools use multiple criteria to select new ninth‐grade participants. Selected students visit the Laboratory annually throughout high school for evaluation, testing, counseling, and visits to classes and professors in fields of their choice. After students come to the University, Laboratory staff members visit their schools to interview parents and meet with teachers. Laboratory activities generate many research questions concerning identification, guidance, and educational and vocational development of superior students. The efficiency of aptitude and mental ability measures to predict high school grade‐point average for Negro students in secondary school was studied. The total sample of 222 students was randomly divided into two samples in order to determine the consistency with which the variables predicted the criteria. The predictor variables were: The Differential Aptitude Tests, the California Test of Mental Maturity, The Cooperative Ability Tests, The Sequential Tests of Educational Progress, Junior High School Grade‐Point Average, and Social Status Ratings. The data were analyzed by multiple linear regression. The instruments consistently yielded substantial correlations with High School Grade‐Point Average. A totally integrated school must include more than biracial enrollment. Open and positive communication at all social and educational levels is paramount in overcoming the complex problems related to the transition from segregated to integrated education. Remedial classes based on standardized achievement tests results can lead to intraschoolde factosegregation and may retard positive interaction. Teachers assigned to integrated schools should be of demonstrated competence and should not be the recipients of a “last chance” teaching assignment. While teachers and counselors sharing race in common with students may lead to more easily established positive interactions and identification, the opportunity for wholesome interactions with competent staff of another race must not be ignored. School integration should occur at the early elementary levels to allow minority group students to profit from quality education throughout their academic care

Friction between counseling personnel and administrators affects the work of each. Background reasons for difficulties in working together are explored. Four areas offering possible remedial measures are examined: the nature of compromise, problems in communication, emotional health, and a framework for understanding behavior. Aspects of a program model are provided. Suggestions are made for specific areas in which data are needed and proposals for method are offered.

The findings from programs of guidance, counseling, and psychotherapy suggest an answer to Eysenck's challenge to the efficacy of the “helping” professions. While no average differences are found in the outcomes of treatment and control groups, there is a pronounced trend toward significantly greater variability in the post‐counseling change indices of the treatment groups when compared to the control groups.
