摘要:
This paper contrasts the myriad functions assigned to counselors by educational optimists with the reality of counselor‐student load. It rejects the image of clinical psychologist held by many junior college counselors. It argues that present junior college counseling is often based on faulty perceptions of the proper function and that correction lies in determined concentration on vocational and educational counseling, value analysis being concomitant to these inseparably linked tasks. It concludes with some critical comment on the education of counselors to prepare them for proper performance of the crucial function of vocational and educational counselin

摘要:
The purpose of this article is to throw some light upon the contribution existential thought has to make to counseling and religious experience. The existential approach aims at grasping the total phenomenological world of the client, including the world of religious experience. Key concepts in the client's religious world are freedom, personal encounter with God, and the discovery of meaning in life. One of the goals of counseling is to promote that freedom which will permit the client on his own to participate in a true encounter with God and his fellow man and discover for himself a meaning of life.

摘要:
Certain philosophical issues which appear to be of paramount importance to the counselor are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the humanism of existentialism and client‐centered counseling as compared with the determinism of the behavioral sciences. Phenomenology is considered to be potentially either existential or deterministic. Other aspects of existentialism and determinism that are closely examined are reality, freedom, religion, and values. Both reality and values are viewed in a phenomenal sense, and as a part of the perceptual field of the individual; they are thus relative and dependent on each individual's particular perception. Freedom of the individual is considered to be the basic thread which permeates all views of existentialism. Some doubt is expressed as to the future of the freedom of man if man must see himself as a determined person living in a determined world. The relationship between existentialism and psychotherapy is examine

摘要:
The behavioral scientist can readily agree that existentialism is a powerful and meaningful movement for the counseling profession. However, to achieve its fullest usefulness it must grow to meet the scrutiny characteristic of the behavioral scientists' methods. Its weakness from this point of view include the reluctance to formulate public definitions of its most prized concepts and its rejection of rigor in methodology. The possibilities of a scientific existentialism which by no means destroys the magnificence of its concepts are demonstrated in a number of available experiments. Counseling as a helping profession cannot responsibly accept existentialism wholly as it comes from contemporary philosophy but must extrapolate and develop it into an adequate science of man.

摘要:
An occupational preference inventory was administered to 50 secondary school students. Each student received 8 scores indicating his preference for occupations falling in each of the 8 Roe categories. A principal components analysis was done on the scores, and it was found that 50% of the test variance could be explained if the 8 categories were arranged in a circular array in approximately the same order as indicated by Roe. Multiple and canonical regression techniques were utilized to show that relationships among category preferences could be explained in part by a social orientation measure derived from the Guilford‐Zimmerman Temperament Surve

摘要:
The literature suggests that among the complex factors differentiating academically failing from succeeding university students are those of unsatisfactory social habits. The hypotheses that unsuccessful students show an inadequate personal‐social orientation and that the underlying dimensions may be identified by factor analysis were tested using 2 criterion groups, each of 64 full‐time Australian university students. The California Test of Personality, with additional biographical items, was administered. The hypotheses were confirmed. Empirical analysis of results showed that Failing students may be classified in overlapping sub‐groups demonstrating heterogeneous characteristics summarized as (a) extraverted over‐reactivity, (b) low study motivation, and (c) social maladjustment; i.e., inadequate social habits rather than neurotic symptoms. Factor analysis points to a “failing orientation” which may be attributed to a sub‐cultural clash between social skills, habits and attitudes learned in the home, and those appropriate in the academi

摘要:
Environmental demands may have positive or negative effects upon individual behavior and goal direction. This paper, using field theory as a frame of reference, attempts to examine the impact on students of various school and individual demands and expectations. Specifically, the use of stereotype as a basis for reward and encouragement systems is explored. Implications for counselors are derived from the discussion which calls for continued self‐examination of counselor attitudes and procedures as well as an increasing concern by counselors with their catalytic, human relations function in promoting positive school climates and realistic individual demand

摘要:
This study investigated: (1) the relationship between students' expressions of confidence about completing their educational programs successfully and actual achievement and continuation; and (2) the relationship between expressions of confidence and measures of academic ability, interests, and personality. 547 male freshmen engineering students were classified into 3 groups by their expressions of confidence. Ss who lacked confidence about their objectives obtained significantly better 1st‐quarter GPA's than did most confident Ss, but there was no difference in persistence between the groups. Among dropouts, Ss who lacked confidence were more likely to be in good academic standing than the most confident Ss. Expressions of confidence were not related to measures of ability or interests, but were related to personality scales. Differences were found on MMPI scales F, D, Pd, Pa, Pt, and Si. Counseling might be useful with students who are doubtful about the appropriateness of their major
