If it is to survive as a significant part of the educational enterprise, school counseling must become a more rigorous and better integrated discipline. Our role in the school system must be clarified. Both our ethical and psychological assumptions must be made more explicit and subjected to logical analysis. Our psychological concepts must be tested empirically.Our major goal should continue to be that of increasing the freedom of the individual student, in a literal sense. This can best be done by helping him increase the number of significant courses of action available to him at important decision points in his life. The counselor's efforts, therefore, should focus on the decision‐making process. Counselors should teach students to search for more rather than fewer alternative solutions to their educational, vocational, and personal problems and to evaluate the probable consequences of each alternative in terms of both the external events that are likely to follow and also the individual's own internal reactions to those events. The initial counseling interview provides an excellent opportunity to study significant changes in the direction of the client's behavior and his reactions to them. Such changes may occur in his family situation, relations to the opposite sex, job history, recreational pursuits, health experiences, religious affiliations, and academic achievements. The client's report of his reactions to such redirection points often throws light upon his typical response to frustration—whether it be task‐oriented or defense‐oriented, on his attitudes toward other people and himself, the rigidity or flexibility of his thought processes, his tendency to move into or away from challenging situations, his awareness of his own motivation, his ability to deal effectively with his feelings and emotions, changes in his basic life values and continuity, and change in his self‐

摘要:
Ninth grade pupils were asked to indicate the extent of their agreement with three statements each of which was attributed to a different one of three communicator groups: parents, peers, and counselors. On the average the 189 pupils agreed most readily with the statements when they were attributed to counselors. The findings and methodology suggest a relatively simple yet powerful technique for assessing the relative influence of various persons, groups and practices on pupil attitudes.

By the end of 1964, over 3,800 Volunteers will have returned from Peace Corps service. As Volunteers usually serve only two years in the Peace Corps and are far removed from guidance assistance, they have a special need for career counseling. A Peace Corps Volunteer Career Information Service has been established to help returning Volunteers with educational and career planning, to help insure maximum use of this valuable manpower resource, and to provide a means through which interested organizations can contact returning Volunteers. Among special programs attracting returning Volunteers are the Eleanor Roosevelt Memorial Foundation Internship program in human rights, the Washington Action for Youth teaching project at Cardozo High School (Washington, D. C.), and the Ford Foundation Study Development Fellowship program. Among the first Volunteers to return, 49 per cent are continuing their education, 12 per cent are working for the Peace Corps and other Federal agencies, 15 per cent are employed in private industry, 13 per cent are serving as teachers, and the remaining 11 per cent have not returned to this country or are non‐employed housewive

This paper summarizes research with the American College Testing Program (ACT) at one university over a 3‐year period. Subjects were 4,597 freshmen divided into 5 groups by college and sex. General positive conclusions were that the ACT (a) is a good measure of general scholastic aptitude, (b) has definite administrative advantages to the university by providing scores prior to a student's admission, and (c) aids prediction for certain subgroups of students. The relationship of counselor opinion to conditions of professional isolation and non‐isolation was investigated through tests of 9 hypotheses derived from social psychological literature concerned with conformity processes, reference group theory, and cognitive dissonance. Data analyzed were obtained from personal interviews conducted with 20 Wisconsin counselors in both conditions. 5 hypotheses were statistically supported at or beyond the .05 level by chi‐square. Isolated counselors reported higher satisfaction with their positions, perceived both their administrators and faculties as more supportive of the guidance program in their schools, read the professional guidance literature less often, and looked to fellow professionals in the guidance field for leadership less frequently than did non‐isolated counselors. Analyses of descriptive variables characteristic of the subjects studied failed to discriminate between the groups with the exception of sex. Implications for future research were

Theories regarding cause and treatment of juvenile delinquency are examined. The emotional disturbance underlying delinquency is suggested as the treatment target rather than the acting out behavior per se. The treatment approach to adolescents is placed in historical perspective, reflecting relative neglect of vocational service. Vocational development of “normal” and “disturbed” adolescents is contrasted and offered as a phase of personal development and a separate area of growth. Those features that characterize vocational development are highlighted and related to the growth pattern of disturbed adolescents. A theoretical structure is offered for understanding this population and designing a vocational treatment approach. A pilot project is described for integrating vocational rehabilitation, as a treatment discipline, with other forms of treatment in a psychiatrically oriented program. The special vocational rehabilitation needs, and consequent problems, of this population are recognized and accepted as a challenge and an opportunity for greater professional

MMPI results of 54 advertising men and 44 engineers were compared. Overall, the personality profiles of the groups were surprisingly similar, with marked elevations on K and Ma, lesser elevations on Hy and Pd, and a depression on Si. These patterns were believed to reflect self‐confidence, enthusiasm, ability to present oneself in a favorable light, use of repression and denial in handling psychological stresses, and an inclination to solicit social intercourse. With the purpose of resolving some of the questions concerning the legal liability of personnel workers, the two kinds of liability, criminal and civil, are discussed with their implications of negligence. Review of relevant statutes and/or court decisions from 1839 to the present point up the fact that although the state college or university itself, as a government institution, is generally shielded by the state's sovereign immunity, the personnel worker has always been and continues to be liable for his own negligent acts. Medical care, transportation and privacy of communication are discussed as particularly important aspects of personnel work and their inherent dangers as pertains to liability for the personnel worker are pointed up by legal precedence. The lack of protection by the state and of the clarification of “safe” behavior in these areas make it imperative that the prudent personnel worker protect himself against possible legal suit.
