摘要:
The context in which the higher education of engineers takes place is characterized by the exponential growth of the production of information. As a result, it is first of all completely illusory to claim to teach everything and, furthermore, each engineer must be prepared to renew his or her knowledge and competence throughout his or her professional life. These conditions are behind the necessity of having methodological teaching which aims at giving a mastery of the way to look for, process and use specialized information. However, this methodological teaching can only take on its full meaning, reach its highest efficacy, if it is fully integrated as an essential part of the overall pedagogical plan underlying the training concerned.

摘要:
The objective of this paper is to present the experience of the ETS Ingenieros de Caminos of the Technical University of Catalonia, Barcelona, in the training of engineering students for a better mastery of specialized information and documentation. The paper defines what the authors’ approach to what an engineer is and what his/her abilities should be. Some aspects related to methodology of access to documentation, as well as the existing facilities at the Technical University of Catalonia are also presented. Finally, the role of computers in engineering education and in handling technical information is discussed

摘要:
Considerable ‘user education’ work of high quality has been produced from academic librarians to impart information skills to students on degree-level and diploma BTEC engineering courses. However, in the author's opinion, this lacks a focus on some points of importance for the effective teaching of potential engineers and technologists, This requires the following.

摘要:
This paper concerns the main factors that contribute to information being regarded as a strategic resource in organizations. It touches on the nature of the technological infrastructures involved in the transfer of knowledge to Portuguese industry, particulary within the areas of the Plan for the Technological Development of Portuguese Manufacturing Industry and PEDIP (Programme for the Development of Portuguese Industry). It also analyzes the contribution of LNETI/CITI in the creation of information systems and information training as a means of stimulating the modernization of the national production base. LNETI/CITI's contribution is made through the creation of information infrastructures and through the training of personnel. It also describes the curriculum and objectives of the Masters (MSc) Course in Information Management. This course was set up as a result of the protocol agreed between LNETI/CITI and the University of Sheffield/Department of Information Studies (UK).

摘要:
Why should engineering students be trained in the effective use of information sources? How can this education and training be integrated into the curriculum within technical universities? What role can information specialists and librarians play for training future engineers in this field of information mastery?

摘要:
This paper proposes objectives for information studies for engineering students derived from several years' experience of teaching this subject at Napier Polytechnic, Edinburgh. Napier's approach to information studies is described and analyzed; sample curricula are appended. Information studies programmes should have both short-and long-term objectives. In the short term to make students more effective users of their university or college library. In the long term to provide lifelong information retrieval and analysis skills which will serve the engineer throughout professional life.

摘要:
Teaching the students how to search the special literature has been a traditional service of the Central Library of the TUB since 1958. The education is carried out by engineers working on the information department of the Library. The curriculum, the evaluation, the place in the schedule and the duration of the subject depend on the main subject of the given faculty. However, everybody gets the basic knowledge about the use of the library and abstract as well as about the UDC, The effectiveness of the user education is influenced by the motivation of the students, too. That is why since we show in the on-line information retrieval, their interest has been increasing.

摘要:
The paper details the content of a course on research methodology, aimed at improving engineering students' skills of information seeking. In addition to helping students carry out research for their university theses, the course should also help them with problem solving in their future working environments.

摘要:
This paper provides a summary of how instruction and training in the use of library information resources is currently presented to engineering students at Cranfield Institute of Technology. The Cranfield campus of the Institute has an almost entirely postgraduate community, which means that the library aims to provide a personalized information service to meet the highly specialized needs of its users. Instruction is carried out both on a group basis and during one-to-one discussions with students, especially as they begin to prepare literature searches for their research projects. Emphasis is placed on conveying the importance of requesting more information about specialist sources, when this is actually required. The paper concludes with a brief discussion on how it is envisaged user instruction will evolve at Cranfield. This is likely to lead to the development of an information counselling and advisory role for library staff, targeted at specific groups throughout the duration of their research work, focussing on for example use of electronic information sources, the production of personal data bases, and the presentation of technical reports and theses.
