摘要:
The formation process in the UK for a professional engineer is a combination of academic learning, a period of training and experience, and a peer review. This paper sets out the minimum standards required by the Engineering Council and describes in detail the Routes to Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers. In particular it concentrates on how the educational base is satisfied by the accreditation of individual degree courses that meet the academic requirements, and the procedures adopted. It reviews the current thinking and possible changes to ensure the maintenance of standards.

摘要:
The Politecnico di Milano first introduced the ‘Diploma Universitario’ 3-year curriculum in its off-Milan campuses; the experiments having proven successful, the Faculties of Engineering and Architecture decided to activate Diploma courses on the main campus in Milan. In order to select the specific courses that should be introduced, to focus the curricula and to prepare the ground for intensive university-industry interaction in teaching as well as in industrial training activities, a cooperation was set up between the Milan Industrial Association (Assolombarda) and the Politecnico itself. This paper describes this experience, analyzing the activities performed and the results obtained.

摘要:
In this retrospective we place the introduction of the ‘Corso di Diploma Universi-tario‘ (CDU) in the context of the engineering education in Europe at the beginning of the 1990s. The idea to harmonize the formation of engineers among the countries adhering to the European Union (EU) was still valid. By 1 January 1993 the ‘four freedoms’, free movement of goods, capital, services and people within the EU was to be introduced. In order for an engineer to work in another EU country his formation should be of the same quality as that given to his peers in the host country. In particular, ‘Brussels’ hoped for two types of formation in all EU countries, a practical one dispensed by institutions like Fachhochschulen and a more scientific one given by Technical Universities. (This dichotomy is alternatively known as short-and long-term formation).

摘要:
The last 3 years have seen extensive time and resources invested in quality assessment/quality improvement (QA/QI) within the Irish university sector. The introduction of a formalized QA/QI programme in the 1998/99 academic year at University College Dublin (UCD) of Ireland-Dublin, will mean that every department in College will have a direct and compulsory involvement in the quality assurance programme in the coming years. There is limited experience of formalized quality assessment in the higher education sector in Ireland, and several pilot projects have been running which represent a first step in establishing a methodology suited to conditions prevailing within the Irish context. The Universities Act 1997 in Ireland will drive the issue of quality assessment in the university sector and ensure that emphasis is placed on the attainment of the highest possible standards in teaching and research. The universities are responding to this new challenge by adopting a pro-active approach and implementing the QA/QI schemes as a matter of some urgency. This paper outlines details of key pilot projects undertaken in recent times.

摘要:
The paper traces the development of initiatives in respect of continuing professional development (CPD) for engineers. It considers the dynamics of European and UK national institutions, and the CPD programmes which have resulted. Some of the problems are identified and discussed. These include the practical difficulties of supply, demand and cost, as well as the tensions between UK professional associations and the European societies and federations concerning jurisdiction and control of licensing and quality assurance.

摘要:
Engineering education is being reviewed worldwide, for its approach to developing adaptive, creative, communicative engineers who can work effectively in a team and be aware of the broader implications of engineering on society. The first year has been a focus for many courses for several reasons, and this paper attempts to collate various approaches which have been made across the world relating to first-year issues. The literature is reviewed and discussed alongside the results of a survey, exploring the various difficulties faced in first-year courses and how the different institutions have addressed these concerns. Six major categories were identified: creating a short introductory course; additional help with one aspect of the course; developing a new or overhauled subject; introducing an entire curriculum change; mentoring/ tutoring by staff; peer tutoring. The effectiveness of such approaches is discussed alongside issues regarding implementation.

摘要:
This paper first examines the advantages of using inductive pedagogic methods to teach management to engineers, over the hypothetico-deductive model so typical of French further education generally. Then we shall attempt to describe the necessary conditions in which a student may be led to discover the complexity of a concrete management system; and this in two ways. First of all, by examining the nature of the system of interactions between students, managerial structures and the teacher and then by attempting to analyze how the mechanisms of skill transference work and what their limits are.

摘要:
Global concern for knowledge about and competencies for entrepreneurship and small business is growing. When discussing university training for entrepreneurship an action-oriented approach is needed. Originating in an elaboration of Kolb's model of action learning, an ‘entrepreneurial action capability’ (EAC) test is constructed. The test is based on the ‘critical-incident’ technique and validated against other images of entrepreneurial characteristics. Swedish university students, including those on special programmes oriented towards innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as existing small-business owner-managers are analyzed with the help of the EAC and associated tests. Substantive conclusions indicate that owner-managers, business students and engineering students score differently on the EAC test. It is argued that these groups use their intuition and analogical reasoning differently. The lest findings are used to modify the original learning model. Methodological lessons are that any formal tests, however realistic with respect to contents, are alien to practitioners. Thus, comparisons across different learning contexts for entrepreneurship entail great difficulties.

摘要:
With the development of information technologies we observe more and more possibilities for their use in education. The paper deals with general issues in the field of Internet use in education and with its role in so-called distance education. After a brief review of actual issues, the paper describes how novel approaches could be utilized in the case of teaching Computer Communications and Networks at the Faculty of Computer and Information Science. As the plan has not yet been accomplished, its first phase (improved communication/ information flow between students and teacher as well as computer-mediated assignment accomplishing) and the work in progress are described in the paper. Intuitive evaluation of results is given and further steps are described.
