摘要:
This article discusses the formation requirements for British engineers to work effectively within the framework of a European manufacturing industry. Communication skills are vital and in view of the coming developments within the European Community, it is the European languages which are most relevant for British industry. Language itself is only the basic requirement, and aspects of culture and style are seen to be of equal importance. Various scenarios are outlined for education and training to be integrated within degree courses.

摘要:
Engineering courses provided in English at different technical universities were meant to satisfy the urgent demand of the 1980s in Hungary. The English programme of the Technical University of Budapest (TUB) was established fairly soon after its foundation in 1984; German, French and Russian programmes succeeded the pilot one 8 years later. The compatibility of all the four projects with counterpart national curricula is bilaterally guaranteed. The present paper aims to give an overview of different engineering education programmes available for foreign students at the International Center for Engineering Programmes (ICEP) of the TUB. The coexistence of different types of engineering education within the same institution provides unique experiences of difficulties and benefits that, undoubtedly, might be utilized internationally.

This article presents findings of a survey aimed at assessing the attitudes of faculty towards the absorption of immigrant students from the former Soviet Union. Data were collected from 33 lecturers in four colleges for the training of technicians and practical engineers in Israel. Responses range along a continuum between the view condoning assimilation (model 1) and the view advocating a gradual process of integration (model 2). These are pre‐existing models of sociological attitude towards immigrant absorption distinguished by Eisikovitz and Beck (1991, Studies in Education, 55/56, pp. 33‐50). According to model 1, all students should be granted equal attention and immigrant students should not be given special treatment. Model 2 recognizes the special status of the immigrant student and the intrinsic problems that accompany this status and, accordingly, the need to find appropriate solutions. Although there is general agreement regarding the main difficulties faced by the immigrants (namely, language problems, financial problems and cultural adjustment), most of the respondents seem to be closer to the perception expressed by model 1 and recommend that the academic requirements, teaching methods, timetable and curriculum be the same for the immigrants as for the veteran Israeli students. Nevertheless, attitudes conforming to model 2 were also expressed as revealed in the recommendation that immigrant students be offered special assistance in preparatory frameworks which should include courses to help acquaint them with the realities of Israeli society, and that they be provided with maintenance grants, textbooks, tutoring, etc. In general, different elements are adopted from each model in accordance with the special needs and circumstances of the immigrant population enrolled in the college.

摘要:
Computer structural analysis is now one of the fundamental pillars in the teaching of engineering. The task is to capitalize on all the new technologies in order primarily to help the students understand the behaviour of structures and, by the same token, improve their ability to analyze them. Consequently, the computer has to be exploited in a smart and ingenious way to achieve this task better. If, in the past, this was done in a more or less successful way, it is nowadays extremely difficult, if not quite impossible, to perform this task in a satisfactory manner. This is changing not only the teaching of structural analysis but also the content of the engineering courses. Hence, a reassessment and a reorganization of the teaching of computing for structural analysis have to take place. In this paper, a few ideas on the teaching of computing for structural analysis are discussed.
