摘要:
A profile is sketched of engineering statistics by contrasting it with statistics courses for students of mathematics on one hand, and for social science students on the other. Aspects which play a role comprise level of abstraction, amount of technical detail and choice of subjects. A brief outline is given of feasible forms and contents of statistics courses for engineers. Special attention is devoted to the nature of exercises suitable in this context. Questions addressed concern the degree of adaptation to the student's own field of study and the (dis)advantage of embedding the pure statistical problems into a technical ‘story’.

摘要:
The paper presents approaches far a number of classical and elementary topics in probability and optimization in estimation theory. The author hopes that the approaches can offer useful alternatives (such as simpler or more complete derivations) to the classical approaches. Most topics are illustrated by one or more typical examples. In the area of estimation theory we present a definition of MLE, which resolves the well-known problems on the boundary of the parameter space, and an elementary derivation of the normal equations in least squares estimation.

Interesting and effective environments to encourage students' understanding of concepts and ideas in the engineering curriculum are faciliated by the application of statistics in laboratory experiments, by the availability of automated PC-controlled data acquisition systems, and by the use of statistical analysis tools in data collection. This paper provides a description of engineering programmes that have successfully used automated data acquisition systems to implement data collection and analysis experiments. The goal is to challenge students to make decisions about statistical issues such as the following: sample measurement design; appropriate statistics for summarizing measurement data and their reliability; suitable graphical representation formats; the choice of procedures for making salient comparisons; and suitable procedures for estimating the parameters of a theoretical model in the presence of variability in the measurement data. Reference is made to engineering laboratory experiments in the following areas: instrumentation laboratory courses, performance analyses of engineering systems, computer simulation models, optimum product design, computer-aided material testing, process control laboratories, and pilot plant experiments. The integration of these tools into laboratory activities has resulted in a revitalization of many curricula. The approach offers opportunities to gain new, more rigorous, and creative engineering environments that allow for the development of more powerful engineering applications.

摘要:
The aim of this paper is to stress the need for a better training in stochastic methodology for European engineers. The emphasis is on applied probability. In Section 2, a brief introduction to the main features of queueing theory is given, as well as some examples of applications of queues to manufacturing and service industries. Sections 3 and 4 present some recommendations for further action and some final comments concerning stochastic education for engineers.

摘要:
Many engineers lack the necessary expertise to correctly analyse and interpret data resulting from an experiment. The conceptual framework of stochastics lies in the possibility of measuring the expectation of future' events on the basis of ‘past’ statistical data. Their observation leads in general to a decrease of uncertainty with respect to the initial situation: the measurement of this uncertainty can be quantitatively carried out through the concept of probability. We maintain that the precise and rigorous formulation of this process of ‘learning from experience’ can be realized by a merging of the Bayesian inferential procedure with the subjective and intuitive ‘real-life’ concept of probability as degree of belief.

It is suggested that reliability theory should be treated in engineering education in a separate course, compulsory or elective. Course content of such a course is given with commentaries on a selected number of items in the course. The importance of computer software is mentioned. 摘要:
The quality concept is today strongly connected with customer satisfaction. One important reason for the quality and productivity success in the Japanese industry is a consequent and systematic use of statistical methods during different stages of the production process. The quality challenge of the European industry therefore implies claims both on the industry to use more statistical methods and on the teaching of statistics at engineering schools at different levels. In this paper we discuss the modern quality development and the role of statistical methods in this development. We also emphasize its strong implications for the teaching of statistics at engineering schools.
