In any engineering curriculum, education and training in quality technology should be offered. In Linköping all engineering students now have the possibility to take such a course. In this paper we describe the programme offered by the Division of Quality Technology at Linköping University. We also give some brief comments on the research programme at the Division of Quality Technology.

摘要:
The programme in quality improvement and engineering design at City University, London is presented. Interdisciplinary design and quality are linked in a number of ways from case-studies in experimental design methods to statistical simulation linked to computer aided design. The new Engineering Design Centre and Quality Unit collaborate with several departments within the School of Engineering where quality and reliability are real issues: civil engineering (structures) and electrical engineering (instrumentation) provide examples. The Engineering Design Centre and Quality Unit undertake work with industry and examples of these are given in the paper.

摘要:
Response to the needs of society and industry is rather slow, and efforts are being made to strengthen relations with industry through visits, training of students in industry, joint committees, conferences etc. Aims for engineering students have been given including concentration on practical applications, linking study with practical life, choosing graduation projects that solve real problems, realizing early contacts with private and public sector, working as a team etc. Recommendations for the introduction of training courses in engineering schools have been given including the following: designing of courses jointly by school and users; recruiting lecturers from both industry and school; making training and applications at laboratories of both school and industry; asking for feedback and comments from participants; paying visits to industrial projects; encouraging professors to visit industry and spend their sabbatical leave there. Joint coordinating committees from industrial decision makers and schools of engineering should be established in order to set up programs.

摘要:
This report is of research in progress on the nature of the learning task in university courses. Six expert engineering teachers and researchers, two each from the Universities of Western Ontario, Cambridge and Stanford, were asked to describe their perceptions of learning in their courses. Introductory courses are described first to show what skills students bring to an engineering programme, what the learning task is, and how learning is evaluated. The description of upper level courses provides an insight into the development of engineering skills in the programme. Finally, experts' comments on expertise in the field and its relationship to learning in the courses show how far along the way graduates from engineering programs are to becoming experts.
