摘要:
An adequate supply of engineers is essential to maintain a competitive position in a highly sophisticated global economy. Population dynamics and student career choice trends presage a protracted period of shortage of bachelors and doctoral engineers in the USA in the 1990s. Actions to alleviate the shortage have been proposed by the Engineering Deans’ Council of the American Society for Engineering Education.

摘要:
This paper presents a philosophy for the education of professional engineers in Belgium at university level. The programme taught at the Catholic University of Leuven, and specifically at the Power Engineering Division of the Electrical Engineering Department of the Engineering Faculty, serves as an example. This is a typical example of a classical topic suffering from a dearth of students. These are attracted instead by such perceived glamourous study areas as robotics, communications and electronics. We will analyse how modem techniques may be emphasised in classical studies and may help to make these directions more attractive, and how they may help to give students sufficient technical knowledge, without losing emphasis on generalism. We will show how the curriculum must be organised to account for the specific situation of Belgium in a unified Europe. A comparison will be made with the North American situation.

摘要:
Speed and diversification of technological as well as political development change the prediction of whether there will be a shortage or overflow of civil engineering students in Germany. In order to answer this question as satisfactorily as possible the interested reader will be provided with some of the latest data, as well as with the main traits of the German system of engineering education. Even though this brief communication only deals with civil engineers, many of the conclusions are also true for other relevant disciplines in German engineering. To what extent there will be a change in the ‘engineering system 2000’—only introduced in 1989—in the German Democratic Republic or, even more importantly, to what degree there will be a joint venture building industry in the two German states can only be guessed at. In any case there is a second momentum besides that of the European Market of 1993 which will strongly influence the recruitment and demand of civil engineering students in Germany.

Considered at the beginning as a risky enterprise, the study carried out by the CEFI under the direction of the CNGE about the long-term evolution of engineers' needs seems to be equal to the expectations: it is true that the CEFI was in a unique position, owing to its competence and experience in the subject, to carry out this work which set real difficulties.

摘要:
In France, training in engineering was exclusively provided by the ‘Grandes Ecoles’. In this context, the French universities have been developing engineering training alongside traditional training courses. The growth in engineering training has been particularly important during the last five years. The author describes the conditions of the setting up and the nature of the different training courses and gives an evaluation after the first twenty years of their existence. The statistics regarding the profiles of the applicants, the distribution over the different specializations and the salary progression are given.

摘要:
The paper draws attention to a decline in the popularity of engineering studies in the UK, with consequent difficulties in the recruitment of a sufficient number of able young people into the profession. The situation has particularly serious implications at the present time when major changes are being proposed in the methods of funding higher education; however, opportunities do exist to find solutions to the problem and some possible directions are suggested.

摘要:
An increasingly competitive commercial world places greater emphasis on the creativity and management skills of engineers. There is considerable debate within the engineering education community on how best to develop these skills at the undergraduate level. This paper describes one approach that has been used successfully to integrate engineering, creativity and management in a graded way throughout the undergraduate programme. A special feature of the approach is the early introduction of creativity and management in a case study-based subject in the second year of a four-year programme. Subsequent subjects build on this and introduce more advanced or specialised aspects as the student's maturity grows.

摘要:
This paper presents a new theory for high-technology curriculum updating. A mapping sentence, based on the FACET approach, has been designed to establish a definitional system for skills and knowledge required from an Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Technology (EET & MET) student upon his or her graduation. On the basis of the mapping sentence, four structured questionnaires were constructed and run on a representative (stratified) sample of EET and MET technologists and their supervisors. Structural lawfulness for occupational skills has been discovered through the Weighted Similarity Structure Analysis (WSSA1) method. The main aspects under investigation were (1) modality (cognitive, instrumental and affective); (2) time (skills demanded at present and those supposedly to be required three years hence); (3) form (manual or simulative); (4) scope (specific or interdisciplinary). The introduction and verification of the theory for high-tech curriculum updating presented in this article is apart of a comprehensive study aimed at developing a ‘Systematic Curriculum Alignment and Watch’ (SCAW) model.
