摘要:
American higher education is characterized by enormous program and quality diversity among the 3842 institutions (1998 data) with two- or four-year programs (of which 319 institutions have one or more engineering programs). Sharp distinctions emerge along several axes: funding (private vs public), size (hundreds to tens of thousands of students) and mission (research vs teaching). Recently the accreditation organizations for universities broadly and for engineering specifically have addressed this diversity by moving to outcomes-based assessments. Rather than judging student performance in terms of classes passed, institutions must (1) define their distinctive mission, (2) design a curriculum to help students achieve these goals, (3) assess student learning outcomes according to both institutional and professional criteria, and (4) create a culture of continuous improvement to belter align steps (1) and (2). Adoption of similar procedures may help European engineering institutions to measure programs across boundaries and to foster ‘trans-national recognition’.

摘要:
Arrangements for qualification as a professional engineer in the UK are briefly described, giving emphasis to the initial university educational component. The part played by the Institutionally administered accreditation process is discussed within the particular context of the Board responsible for the construction sector.

摘要:
It is argued that cooperation between partners from research, university and industry has matured to an extent that certain functions have turned out to be inevitable characteristics of technology transfer. The functions are described. They can be provided by a market of services with a certain culture of quality based on competition which efficiently distributes limited resources under fast progress of technology.

摘要:
During the restructuring of the Mechanical Engineering degree course at the University of Auckland it became evident that there was a requirement for more information concerning “what mechanical engineers do!” and “what knowledge or skills are required by them to perform this function”. In order to resolve these questions two surveys, one involving graduates and the other undergraduates, were undertaken.

摘要:
The survey reported in the present article demonstrates the job-analysis technique for evaluating and updating syllabuses. The survey examined the correspondence between the training syllabus of BTech and practical engineers in the area of biotechnology and the demands of industrial plants and the economy, similarities and dissimilarities in job definition and assignments, and job demands in the present and future and their implications for training syllabuses. The survey findings are based on 37 questionnaires completed by directors and engineers in 13 industrial plants. In general, the job of the practical engineer was perceived in terms of the production-floor level with importance attached to skills such as competence in running and maintaining equipment, conducting experiments according to a preset protocol, and personal characteristics such as technical skill and precision. The main expectations of BTech engineers were the capacity for originality and initiative, comprehension and analysis, precision, oral and written articulacy, and teamwork. The findings also suggest that most of the subject areas in the syllabuses evaluated are important both for the practical and for the BTech engineers.

摘要:
In the Materials Department of Imperial College we have introduced a peer tutoring scheme for the first-year subject of crystallography. It is a subject which students find difficult since it involves new concepts, in particular the use of three-dimensional lattices and structures. Formally, the subject is taught through lectures, class work and general tutorial sessions. We have trained peer tutors over 2 days, to understand the need to draw out students so that they work through and think out for themselves some of the more confusing aspects of the subject. Within a very short period of time, the tutors had developed so that, rather than seeing their role as a surrogate teacher, they understood their role to be that of a facilitator. The fact that the peer tutors could use real scientific concepts in their role plays helped to provide a focus. It also ensured that the tutors realized that they really could use group process and discussion to solve even technical problems. The scheme, with its possible pitfalls and solutions, is discussed in the context of materials science. It is found that peer tutoring, which is often used in more discursive subjects, provides an excellent way to effect a more questioning approach to a very technical subject.

摘要:
Distinctions are drawn between different kinds of learning (such as ‘understanding’, ‘factual knowledge’ and ‘skills’) and between different kinds of learners (such as ‘holist’ versus ‘serialist’ learners, and between ‘visualizers’, ‘verbalizers’ and ‘oers’) so that teaching methods can be matched to them. Learning-centred teaching therefore involves adopting teaching methods, such as ‘student-centred learning’, ‘active learning’, ‘didactive teaching’, ‘problem-based learning’, etc., where they are appropriate, but not where they are inappropriate.

摘要:
Using IT in mathematical education has been a slow revolution. Although calculating tools have, to some extent, been used for several years, they are still controversial among many teachers. The most recent application is the multimedia book with links to Internet sites. These books include hypermedia and hypertext and what is called interactive objects, and allow an explorative and personal way of working. The book Hypermath, developed by the author, is described in this paper. It is expected that the use of multimedia books will be important in the future education of engineers.
