摘要:
Following a significant course review in civil engineering at Monash University, a fourth-year computing elective was introduced in 1995. The author developed the subject as a project-based one, the aim being to allow students to pursue their own computing interests. This paper describes how the subject was run, and documented the student responses. The subject is a good example of student-directed learning, and the enthusiasm and energy which flow from students having ownership of their learning. It also shows how a subject can use a wide range of learning resources, including the Internet, to provide positive outcomes for the department as well as the students. Improvements for the future are included.

摘要:
The Master's degree course in European Construction Engineering has many unique features. Its students come from several different European countries, each student studies in at least three different European locations, and the teaching staff are drawn from seven different European universities. The course is therefore genuinely multinational and European. The development and delivery of the course over the past 6 years has revealed fundamental differences in European education practices which have provided a learning experience for both students and staff. This paper describes the course development and discusses some of the issues that have arisen during the development process, many of which are yet to be finally resolved.

摘要:
Video-on-demand (VOD) is one of a series of emerging interactive broadband services. VOD provides users with the capability to access a vast variety of interactive programmes on demand, and give them full VCR-like control over their programme selections. This paper presents and describes a user interface that was designed for a business VOD service trial operated by Stentor, which began in January 1994, at two universities in Ottawa, Canada. It describes the service architecture and trial setting, as well as presents some trial results. Finally, some recommendations based on these results, and future enhancements to the VOD user interface, are described.

Laboratories are an integral part of engineering courses. Where part-time students miss these an alternative may be provided in simulations. The importance of realism in the screen presentation of the plant is evaluated in this paper. The conclusion is that simulations are less effective than the actual laboratories but that realism minimizes the disadvantages.

This paper presents the tools and methodologies underlying the ARIADNE framework for enabling open and distance education and for enhancing more conventional training schemes. The ARIADNE concept relies on a distributed knowledge pool system that stores pedagogically indexed educational resources, as well as on a set of tools and methodologies for authoring curricula. The basic approach is one of share and reuse. Specialized authoring tools are under development for the production of simulations, multiple-choice questionnaires and auto-evaluation exercises. Segmentation tools for video and text-based material, with integrated facilities for hypertext generation, are also under development. The distributed knowledge pool system consists of one central knowledge pool, and a number of local knowledge pools. Corporate training systems can also be built around private knowledge pools. Before pedagogical documents can be inserted into the knowledge pool system, their pedagogical and other characteristics must be described. A pedagogical header generator tool assists in this task. Pedagogical engineers can define the spatio-temporal, socio-pedagogic process that we call a curriculum, and choose the active and expositive documents that embody it, by using a curriculum editor. Finally, students consult or work with the documents of the curriculum they subscribed to, through a personalized view provided by the ARIADNE learner interface.

This paper addresses postgraduate environmental education by supported distance learning, as offered by the Open University—a major international provider of distance teaching resources. While distance teaching offers advantages of accessibility and cost-effectiveness, it presents difficulties in developing certain skills. In the environmental area, this is especially important in the difference between rote learning and developing practical problem-solving skills. This applies most notably in relation to anticipatory problem -solving, which is a role of environmental auditing. These issues are discussed in the context of the course ‘Enterprise and the Environment’, a module within the MSc programme ‘Manufacturing: Management and Technology’. The role of this course in wider initiatives is also outlined, to include its worldwide use in training accreditors of environmental management systems. The approaches and techniques used by the Open University in providing high-quality, supported open learning materials at such distances provide a model in environmental education at a distance. This paper also refers to techniques for regular updating of material in rapidly developing areas, as well as integrating teaching and research. Reference is also made to a new modular course on ‘Integrated Safety, Health and Environmental Management’.

The paper combines findings from three sources: an international workshop on the environmentally educated engineer, research on the characteristics of the effective engineer and an early-level undergraduate course for civil engineers which aims at laying down an educational foundation for the education of environmentally effective engineers. The main findings are that there is a need for a more general education for some engineers, that an ability to understand and deal with complex systems is a key element for environmental effectiveness, that there is no correlation between engineering effectiveness and the degree of educational attainment, and that the characteristics of effective engineers can be learnt, but are not normally taught in engineering institutions.

Environmental policy-making with the goal of implementing sustainable development is finding its way to local municipalities. Several towns and cities in Europe have already produced detailed environmental programmes for their decision-makers to carry out. However, the demands can sometimes overpower personnel and their capacity to deal with rapid changes, if they are not provided with ‘target training’ or given temporary help by those familiar with these new environmental concepts. This paper discusses some of the various experiences gained in a collaboration between the City of Tampere and the environmental engineering education offered by the Tampere Institute of Technology during recent years. Joint practical and research projects at home and abroad, environmental surveys, short courses and theme days, and practical placements for both Finnish and foreign exchange students are described in this paper. It is the writer's hope that this report will encourage other educators to make similar approaches in their teaching work; to share responsibility in the community between those who know and those who want to know the way of solving some of our local and regional problems.

Engineering education has more than 200 years of tradition in Hungary. Chemical engineers are trained at the Technical University of Budapest (TUB) and at the University of Veszprém. The curriculum of the TUB chemical engineering education is given. Undergraduate environmental engineering education is offered at the University of Miskolc, at the Janus Pannonius University in Pécs and at the University of Veszprém. Curricula of the latter two are given. The TUB has several environmental specialization opportunities for engineering students, but at present no separate undergraduate environmental engineering education is offered. Such a curriculum is now under preparation and will be introduced in 1998. Several technical colleges also offer environmental engineering education, where the duration of the training is 3 years. Postgraduate education is a very suitable form to add environmental knowledge to the existing engineering knowledge of graduate engineers. The TUB and the universities in Miskolc and Veszprém are all very active in this field.

In environmental engineering curricula, pollution abatement technologies are best taught taking a holistic approach to the environment, since the transfer of pollutants from one medium to another will not eliminate the problem. This paper describes two integrated distance-learning environmental engineering degree courses offered by the environmental engineering group of the Open University in the UK. Distance learning is reputed to be the most cost-effective way of acquiring knowledge and is an especially attractive continuing education tool for working professionals. This is exemplified by the number of distance-learning courses now offered by a variety of establishments covering a whole multitude of subjects.
