摘要:
Civil engineering drawing courses need to relate to the students expectations, and discipline and maintain their interest. The main objectives of the drawing course in the Department of Civil Engineering at Monash University are: to teach students the main drawing techniques; to enable students to read and transmit the details on these drawings into understandable information and instructions; to develop the visualization skills of students; and to teach them to present their ideas using drawings. These aims are not uncommon, the main innovation in teaching this material was the introduction of a problem-based learning approach in the progressive assessment. A problem was set and the students asked to solve it progressively. The course was built around a particular civil engineering structure; a house. This allowed many of the students to relate the drawing to their experience and expectations. The house was used as a basis for the development of ideas and the presentation of these ideas using a large number of drawing types. Students' reaction to the course was positive. Statements like “This course is real engineering” were common. Areas for further improvement in the approach are highlighted.

摘要:
At present, engineering degree courses are divided along the well established professional lines. To a large extent, they are science based at the content and methodological level with topics such as control, management and design added as knowledge of and a need for them have become apparent. It appears to be impossible to construct an integrated, i.e. systems- and design-based, course until the limitations imposed by the application of science in the various curricula, are recognized. Accordingly, the objective of this paper is to make these limitations explicit, and to suggest a way forward by making use of linguistic modelling, evolutionary control theory and analysis-based design method.

摘要:
This paper focuses on demonstrating the feasibility of applying expert system methodology as a new approach for assisting the development of engineering degree curricula particularly in developing countries. A number of subdomains in which a rule-based system can be applied have been identified in the field of curriculum development. The subdomain developed and presented in this paper concerns methods of identifying curriculum content, and the major subgoal of developing a profile of ‘staff experience’ in this context is investigated in depth. Knowledge in this subdomain has been encapsulated in an expert system which has been refined to the satisfaction of a curriculum expert and tested by potential end-users of the system.

摘要:
The development of manufactured goods is highly dependent on their basic materials properties. In all aspects of the sciences, materials science and engineering have both a direct and indirect influence on the final properties and performance of manufactured products. It is only during the later years of high school study that aspects of science describing materials behaviour become relevant to later studies in engineering. Students must attain a basic understanding of scientific principles to be able to master the rigours of tertiary engineering studies. A new system of teaching and learning science, with examples drawn from basic principles of materials behaviour, is shown to be commensurate with these requirements. It is our responsibility as educators to develop graduates who are effective in the workplace and understand the relevance of materials to engineering.

摘要:
The experiment with comprehensive project-organized and problem-based engineering education at Aalborg University has now lasted for 20 years. Several independent evaluations show that the graduates are more readily adaptable, with strong qualities in the field of problem-shooting, cooperation, communication and synthesizing project work. Also, their general theoretical and technical knowledge is relatively strong, while their weakness is their fundamentals and relatively low load of handbook knowledge.

During the last 3 years, the Committee on Engineering Information of the World federation of engineering organizations (WFEO) did a large survey around the world, in order to better know the various experiences or realizations that exist in different engineering countries for the training of engineering students in the field of information management. The results of this work have been published by UNESCO in 1992. The present paper aims at presenting the main ideas of what could be an integrated approach of the introduction of information skills within engineering curriculae. He emphasizes some important concepts, such as the determination of information needs as a starting point or the role of information as a true pedagogical dimension. It presents also a general typology of the existing experiences, based on a two-dimensions analysis.

The paths of university students from first matriculation to achievement of the doctorate are compared for nine technically-oriented universities in six countries. Although the ages at which doctorates are awarded vary by 6 or 7 years, the amount of effort invested in research in preparation of dissertations appears to vary little, from just under 3 years to just over 3½ years. The differences in ages at doctorate are mainly due to differences in the breadths of secondary education, in language studies and abilities, in military service and in teaching and administration required of doctoral students. The latter can be reduced by requiring an increased number of qualified researchers to take active roles in university level teaching.

Statistical data concerning student and employee numbers, numbers of degrees awarded, success rates; floor space, operating and research budgets, industrial support of research and some other indicators have been assembled for nine technically oriented universities. Analysis shows that the operating budgets per student vary by a factor of 6 while the teaching budgets per taught student vary by a factor of almost 4. Teaching floor space per taught student varies by a factor of 3. The numbers of doctorates awarded per first degree awarded vary by almost a factor of 6. The universities with the best international reputations are characterized by high research intensities, large budgets per student and relatively great autonomy.
