Arterial-alveolar carbon dioxide tension gradients (a-ADco-) were studied in six dogs before, during, and after the heart was resuscitated from cardiac arrest produced by KCi infusion. The A-Adco2was 9.2 mm Hg five minutes after the heart had been resuscitated, compared with the mean value of 1.G mm Hg in the control period. During the next hour, this gradually decreased to 3.2 mm Hg. Several possible explanations for the increase in a-Adco2are discussed, and it is provisionally concluded that pulmonary blood flow is uneven for a period after circulatory arrest. Increase m Paco2after cardiac resuscitation, however, may be due partly to the increased release of CO2- from the tissue, caused by metabolic acidosis.

The Block-Aid Monitor produces a biphasic pulse. Muscular contraction evoked by ulnar nerve stimulation with this instrument in anesthetized patients is electrically and mechanically similar to that evoked by stimulation with a pair of pulses of 0.1-miIIisecond duration separated by an interval of 5.0 milliseconds. Since this interval is of the same order of magnitude as the neuromuscular refractory period, factors which alter this refractory period will alter the electrical and mechanical properties of the evoked contraction, independent of their effect on the degree of neuromuscular blockade. The Block-Aid Monitor should not be used in place of a conventional laboratory stimulator in the investigation of neuromuscular transmission.

Electrical activity from six sites in the cat brain was monitored before and after systemic and intracerebral administration of graded doses of local anesthetics, pentylenetetrazol and morphine, and correlated with behavioral changes. Results suggest that the amygdaler hypersynchronous fast-ware response evoked by convulsant doses of local anesthetics is due to a lowering of this site's threshold to olfactory inputs. Intracerebral infusion of butacaine into the ventral hippocampus elicited electrographic pattern changes very similar to that induced by systemic administration of local anesthetics. Infusion of pentylenetetrazol into the mesencephalic reticular formation elicited an overall, attenuated electrographic pattern almost identical to that induced by systemic administration of this drug. Morphine given in excitant dosages subcutaneously elicited isolated hippo-campal spiking; the hippocampus also had the lowest threshold to this drug of three sites infused.
