摘要:
The minimum alveolar concentration of anesthetic (MAC) required to prevent response to a painful stimulus was determined in dogs for 7 agents. These equipotent concentrations (in volumes per cent at sea level) were: methoxyflurane 0.230, halothane 0.87, diethyl ether 3.04, fluroxene 6.0, cyclopropane 17.5, xenon 119, and nitrous oxide 188. MAC thus determined correlated more closely with the oil/gas partition coefficient than any other physical constant.

摘要:
The influence of five inhalation anesthetics on lung function and bronchial caliber was determined in dogs during undisturbed spontaneous respiration. Both changes in transpulmonary pressure and changes in smooth muscle tone induced by anesthetics affected the performance of lungs and bronchi.Dynamic lung compliance and bronchial distensibility increased significantly during halo-thane anesthesia without appreciable alteration of the transpulmonary pressure gradient, indicating that halothane reduces bronchomotor tone. Bronchi were less distensible and lung compliance fell during cyclopropane anesthesia suggesting an increase in bronchomotor tone. Changes in lung compliance and bronchial distensibility were minor during ether, methoxyflurane and trichlorethylene anesthesia.Alterations in lung compliance reverted spontaneously during emergence from all anesthetics. With the exception of ether, a positive correlation existed between lung compliance and bronchial distensibility during anesthesia. Deep ether and cyclopropane anesthesia were found to afford some protection against bronchoconstriction and the decrease in lung compliance following intravenous histamine.

摘要:
Forearm venous compliance, venous and arterial pressures, heart rate, and forearm blood flow were measured in adult patients before and at two levels of anesthesia with cyclopropane and halothane. Subjects were not premedicated and observations were made before operation. Cyclopropane anesthesia was accompanied by increases in arterial and venous pressure, and by decreases in forearm venous compliance and blood flow. Halothane anesthesia was associated with decreases in arterial pressure and slight increases in venous compliance, venous pressure, heart rate, and forearm blood flow. The changes in arterial and venous pressure, heart rate and forearm flow observed with both agents are similar to observations reported previously. The decrease in forearm venous compliance found with cyclopropane is attributed to an increase in tone in venous smooth muscle.

摘要:
This article is reprinted from Fundamentals of Hyperbaric Medicine by permission of the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council. It serves both as a chapter, under the authorship of Dr. Severinghaus, in the NAS-NRC volume and as the first report to the American Society of Anesthesiologists of the Committee assigned by the Society to investigate all aspects of hyperbaric oxygenation as they affect anesthesiology. This committee of the A.S.A. consists of Drs. A. H. Behnke, E. I. Eger, II, Peter Hall, Louis H. Lambert, Martin L. Norton Robert M. Smith, Carl Wasmuth, Peter Safar and John Severinghaus, Chairman. The committee also used the consultant services of Drs. Harry Churchill-Davidson, Jon Pegg, Sheldon Gottlieb, Heinz Schreiner, Edward Lanphier and Manno Sluijter.
