摘要:
Malignant fever is a recently-noted, usually fatal complication of anesthesia and surgery. Five cases representing the author' erperience since August, 1966 are described. Serial physiologic changes ocurring during the early phases of the sudden fever are reported for the last two patients. Both patients had received succinylcholine and developed muscular rigidity. Salient findings include metabolic acidosis, hyperkalemia and myoglobinemia. Successful intragasric cooling with a Wangensteen Hypothermia Unit is described. Possible etiologic factors, which may include genetic defects, disturbances of cellular metabolism, and hypothalamic derangement, are discussed.

摘要:
The effects of diethyl ether, in end-expired concentrations ranging from 1.5 to 5.5 per cent, on cervical preganglionic sympathetic activity, mean arterial pressure and barostatic reflexes were studied in normal and baroreceptor-denervated cats. In cats with normal barostatic reflexes no change in arterial pressure occurred at any concentration used. Sympathetic activity was uneffected by the low concatrations but significantly increased at 5.0 per cent. SimiIar responses were observed after dederebration. In baroreceptor-denervated animals arterial pressure decreased progessively as anesthesia was deep ened, but sympathetic activity was uneffected. Barostatic reflexes were significantly depressed at 3.4 per cent and essentially abolished at 5.0 percent. It is postulated that ether causes sympathetic excitation by depressing medullary “depressor” neurons.

摘要:
The effects of fluroxene on cervical preganglionic sympathetic nervous activity and arterial pressure and the responses of both to stimulation of the aortic depressor nerve have been studied in the cat. Three concentrations of fluroxene were used: 4, 8 and 12 per cent, end-expired In normal cats 4 per cent fluroxene affected neither arterial pressure nor sympathetic nervous activity; 8 per cent caused a considerable increase in sympathetic nervous activity without effect on arterial pressure; l2 per cent caused no further change in sympathetic nervous activity, but decreased arterial pressure significantly. Similar responnses were observed after decerebration. In baroreceptordenervated animals increasing depth of fluroxene anesthesia caused a progressive decline in arterial pressure, but did not affect the level of sympathetic nervous activity. Barotaric reflexes were unaffected by fluroxene at 4 per cent, significantly depressed nt 8 per cent, and abolished at 12 per cent. It is concluded tbat fluroxene, like cyclopropane and diethyl ether, causes central sympathetic nervous excitation by depressing medullmy depressor neurons.

摘要:
Tolerance to morphine was induced in goldfish shown to be unable to metabolize morphine. Ability to metabolize is, therefore not a prercquisite to development of tolerance.
