摘要:
Because programs for pregnant adolescents and teenage parents were developed locally. with little federal or state direction, no standard model of service delivery exists. Programs vary in degree of comprehensiveness and in primary location-hospital, school, social agency, or other. A common isumption, however, has been that multi-service programs providing health, educational, and social ser- vices have a greater impact on their participants than programs offering only one of these services. The study reported here tested this assumption by comparing the medical course and subsequent life histories of school-age mothers who participated in a comprehensive program during the prenatal period with those of young mothers who received only health-related services from a hospital in the same city. The relative impact of the two programs was examined contmlling for social factors such as age, race, and socioeconomic status. With the exception of post-delivery educational status, the two study groups had similar medical and social outcomes. The educational difference, however. could not be attributed solely to the impact of the comprehensive program because of variations in educational status prior to entering the two programs. This study suggests that the comprehensive and hospital programs, with their unique emphases, served different groups of clients. The "goodness of fit" which existed between the program and clients demonstrates the need for multiple models of deliver- ing services to school-age parents.

摘要:
Interviews were conducted with 40 women who had amniocentesis between 1973 and 1977. Data were obtained on demographic variables, sources of information, the role of preparation and counseling, attitudes toward abortion, and feelings about the procedure. A major goal of the research was to explain the variation in women's perceptions of the experience. Positjve perceptions were significantly correlated with I) having received counseling, 2) use of the media as a first source of information (rather than a physician), and 3) religious orientation. Each of these factors is related to the availability and use of information. While most of the women perceived themselves to be adequately prepared, they reported negative feelings ranging from mild anxiety to uncontrollable fear. Sufficient information before the procedure lessened anxiety, but the timing and content of this information affected emotional responses. Women who were counseled immediately preceding their amniocentesis had already developed a high level of anxiety which interfered .with the absorption of infomation. A dctailed description of the procedure (in addition to the more abstract risks and benefits) and continuing emotional support lessened anxiety and improved the experience for women having amniocentesis.
