摘要:
This study analyzes longitudinal data for a national sample of older middle-aged women in order to assess the health effects of three roles-labor force participant, spouse and arent. Women who held more roles had better health trends. The effect of each specific role varied, depending on race and the other roles a woman held. For example, our evidence indicates that labor force participation had beneficial effects on health for white women who were not married and for black women who had children at home, but not for other women. The findings of this study do not support the hypothesis that involvement in multiple roles contributes to role overload and role conflict with consequent harmful effects on women's health. Rather, it appears that involvement in multiple roles enerally contributed to better health, due to the beneficial effects of labor force participation and marriage for some women.

摘要:
This study's purpose is to ex lore the possibility of P competing roles (paid employment and chi dcare responsibilities) impinging upon women's annual Pap, breast and blood pressure screenings, and whether HMO enrollments further reventive health care for women in different situations. Usin data rom the National a P Access to Medical Care Survey of 1982, t e sample includes 594 women who are HMO patients, and 2765 women having regular sources of care from providers in other settings. The findings mdia t e a strong association between women's relative financial responsibilities for their families and their use of preventive health services. Women who live in traditional situations (no employment outside the home, su ported b a male) and women who share the financial burden wit k' men (t K e "new" multiple-earner families) have substantially more Pap and breast examinations, respectively, than non-traditional family women who carry the full burden themselves. However, these latter women were more likely to have had blood pressure screening- the least ex ensive, most convenient procedure of those studied. Overall, HM 8 s did not increase preventive care for traditional family women, did help in marginally boosting the breast examinations of women who share financial responsibility with men, and in the blood pressure screenings for women in nontraditional families. The conclusions stress the importance of measures of women's employment in examining access to care, and call for closer scrutiny of HMOs' preventive care protocols for particularly vulnerable clients.

摘要:
This study examines the extent to which the various dimensions of marital interaction are associated with differences in health status of spouses measured by the use of medical services and self-reported health and well-being. Dimensions of marital interaction and health and well-being measures with most covariation are identified and the relative effect of the quality of marital interaction on the health and well-being of husbands and wives are assessed. The study population includes 1004 married couples. Medical record and survey data for each respondent are linked for the analysis. The findings do support the hypothesis that the quality of marital interaction is related to the health of marital partners.

摘要:
This prospective quasi-experimental pilot study investigated the effects of a consumer education program on women's health and related attitudes. Variables addressed were health status, self-care practices, health value, health locus of control, community involvement and health-related consumer and political attitudes. A sample of 25 women were studied over a one-year period. Fifteen of the subjects received an experimental 16-week consumer education program. Analysis of variance of repeated measures suggested that the consumer education produced limited effects. There were no statistically significant changes over time in either the experimental or control groups in relation to any of the outcome variables, except health status. The mean number of reported health problems declined by 59.7% over the year of study in the experimental grou while the control mup reported a 16.9% increase in health problems. These pilot data appear to lend some support to the therapeutic and social value of health education efforts in women's health care.

摘要:
This article reports on a survey of public supported family planning clinic users' travel time, appointment-delay time and waiting-room time. Comparisons of policy norms are made with three contraceptive organizational settings: hospitals, freestanding and community health clinics. The findings reveal freestanding and community health clinics were more accessible. This study suggests that despite the variety of public supported family plannmg clinics most were accessible to low-income women in western Pennsylvania.

摘要:
This two-part article looks at women's attempts to receive compensation for their work-related illnesses in the first sixty years of the twentieth century. Women pressed claims through narrow legal remedies in the tort and workers' compensation systems for a small part of their massive burden of work-related illnesses. Part 1 examines the network of women advocates around occupational disease compensation; women's experience under the employers' liability and workers' compensation systems; women's most frequently compensated illnesses under workers' compensation, dermatitis and systemic poisoning; and notable litigation episodes involving phosphorus and radium poisoning. Part 11 of this article, to be published in the next issue, focuses on compensation for tuberculosis, asbestosis, beryllium disease, and illnesses with a mental component.
