摘要:
Since Ule early 1980s, health care for women veterans in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has improved considerably, although problems still remain. The lack of privacy for women at many VA facilities and the provision of incomplete physical examinalions for women continue to be oroblematic issues. A 1992 congressional appropriation of $7.5 million has substantially increased the awareness of women veterans health care in the VA. This appropriation, from Public Law 102-585, Veterans Health Care Act of 1992, Title I-Women Veterans Health Programs, has allowed VA to expand services for women veterans. Using these funds, VA has established eight comprehensive women veterans health centers, 23 full-time women veterans coordinators, and four regional stress disorder teams. This paper describes these and other important new initiatives and discusses how they will serve as the foundation on which VA expands care for women within the context of a changing health care system.

摘要:
This study examines the relationshio between gender and distress among a sample of never married andmarried individuals aged 18-64 years from the 1987-88 National Survey of Families and Households. The hypothesis that singlehood benefits women more than men in terms of economic and psychosocial resources, which then translate into lower levels of distress, was not completely supported. In general, single women and men a pear more similar than different in resources. although gender diferences in distress vary by age. The importance of recognizing conceptual distinctions among the single is discussed.

摘要:
A cross-sectional survey of 3,136 women attending family planning clinics in Texas was conducted to examine past use of and future plans for use of condoms by partners during sexual intercourse for disease prevention in conjunction with other contraceptive methods. Following the receipt of clinical services, including counseling about family planning and disease prevention, both contraceptive and planned condom use reporting increased for the majority of subjects. However 22% of the sample indicated that they intended to reduce condom use in the future and instead use a contraceptive which protects from pregnancy but not from disease. Condom use was indicated more frequently for those who reported at least one risk faclor for HIV, but 17% of those at risk indicated lower future condom use than past use. This suggests that without changes in risk behavior, these women will be at increased risk of HIV or another sexually transmitted discase.

摘要:
Research suggesls that private physician providers of office abortions and the women who seek their services are not included in nationwide surveys of abortion statistics. This study describes the demographic characteristics of private physicians and the prevalence of abortions performed in their offices in Los Angeles County, California, a state in which office abortions are prohibited by law. Factors that influence physicians' decisions to provide the service, as well as the age and ethnicity of the office abortion recipients, are examined.

摘要:
After over 60 years of research on the premenstrual syndrome (PMS), work in this area continues to be characterized by a pervasive lack of consensus about the definition, aetiology, and treatment, nor is there agreement regarding the utility of this construct. The oersistence of PMS as a medical cateaont desoite the inconclusiven&s of the research, suggests that PMS is not dmply a biomedical entity which eludes exvlanation. It is also a rather complex, ideologicdly and cultural1 J constructed category, which is predicated on a number of unarticulated, but well-entrenched beliefs about the nature of science, biology, health, and femaleness. In this review of the feminist theoretical literature on PMS, the historical, cultural, economic, and political forces that have led to the popularization and medicalization of PMS are explored in light of these assumptions, with a particular emphasis on those that pertain to female biology and psychology. It is argued that research on the premenstruum requires the development of a cohesive theoretical framework that would permit a new lexicon and new questions to explore more fully this aspect of women's menstrual health.
