Studies report that women have diverging preferences f a physician gender. The present study explores some aspects of how women's preferences for physician gender are formed. Using data from a postal survey among Norwegian women, the association between preferences for physician gender and women's priorities regarding physician behavior is examined. Women who, in particular, value there physicians' democratic attitudes tend to prefer female physicians, in contrast to those who prefer a more dominating physician role. Surprisingly, women who especially emphasize the caring qualities of theu physicians, do not have strong preferences for a female physician.

Textual analysis was used to examine responses to an open ended question about women's experiences of premenstrual change. The question was the h a 1 item of the Premenstral Assessment Form (PAF), a retrospective PMS questionnaire. Of the 336 women who answered the PAR 261 provided a written narrative summary. We found a logical hierarchy of distinctions covering the presenct or absence of changes, their timing, and attributive aspects. and a final cumulative distinction in which women provided infonnation about the consequences of their premenstrual 'change. Although attribute aspects mirrored the PAF, distinctions in timing and in the cumulative effect of changes differed. The analysis suggests that questionnaires could be designed which more precisely reflect premenstrual change.

The majority of women who terminate an unwanted pregnancy do so in the first trimester of their pregnancy.' A much smaller population postpones their decision into the second trimester. Abortion delays greatly increase the health risks and mental stress experienced by women. We examine 24O women who underwent abortions in the second trimester of their pregnancy. The analysis focuses on characteristics that distinguish between black and white women. A discriminant analysis of the data identifies a number of variables that differentiate blacks from whites. Variables that are associated with black and white women who delay their abortion decision include attitudes toward legal abortion, religiosity, household income, the presence of other children, residence patterns, an unwillingness to disclose the pregnancy, and social support for their decision. Discussion of the findings focuses on the role played by cultural experiences.

This prospective, longitudinal study was conducted to investigate the changes ig the division of household labor, and in the emotional and practical support received by new mothers during the first postpartum year. Questionnaires were completed by 436 married, recently employed mothers at l, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after they had delivered their Fist child. Results showed that women assumed primary responsibility for the majority of household tasks studied, and that they perceived declines over time in their husbands' participation in household chores, their husbands' and others' expressions of caring, and in the frequency with which friends and relatives "helped out" during the year. Women who had had cesarean sections (versus those with vaginal deliveries) and who returned to work (versus those who stayed home) believed their husbands participated more in traditionally feminine household chores. Women's satisfaction with their husbands' contribution to household activities was significantly related to their own mental health, delivery type (cesarean section), job status (being at home vs. back at work), and family income; and to their husbands' occupation, expressions of caring, and participation in child care and certain household chores (house cleaning, grocery shopping, cooking, washing clolhes and dishes, household repairs, car maintenance, and garbage removal). Overall, these findings showed diminishing levels of emotional and practical support for women at a time when the need for support was likely greater: following the birth of their fist child.

Medical and counseling staff at 13 family planning clinics in Texas, U.S.A., were surveyed regarding their opinions and level of information about the contraciptive Norplant These responses were used to assess the relationships between clinicians' information and attitudes about the contraceptive and the use of that method by their patients. No differences were associated with respondents' clinical responsibilities or with their type of professional training. However, significant variations in the numbers of patients receiving Norplant from individual providers, and in the proportion receiving the method from certain clinics, were associated with responses to some auitudinal questions. These findings suggest that the opinions about Norplant held by personnel staffing family planning clinics influence the method selection of their patients.

African-American and Euro-American women from three predominantly Euro-American colleges in the southeast U.S. between 17 and 23 years of age completed instruments assessing body image attitudes, social competence, sex-role attitudes, racial identity, and a measure of family and personal characteristics. Analyses revealed race differences on all body image measures with the exception of appearance evaluation which was influenced by family income and race. Specifically, African-American women reported more satisfaction with and positive feelings towards their bodies and less dissatisfaction than Euro-American women. Unlike Euro-Americans, African-American women attached importance to fitness and health. The relationship between personal/physical factors and body image was stronger for African-American then Euro American women. Additionally, persona/physical characteristics were the best model of appearance evaluation for African-American women, whereas personal/physical and ssociodemographic factors best predicted this measure for Euro-American women. The results are discussed in relation to body image norms and standards of the African-American subculture and middle-class, Euro-American mainstream culture.
