Interpersonal problem solving ability was assessed in a com- munity-based study with 179 French-speaking women who were consum- ing psychotropic drugs a t varying frequencies. Significant differences were found between psychotrope consumers and nonconsumers in problem solving scores, with deficiencies in defining the problem characteristic of regular consumers. When subjects were separated on the basis of the Beck Depression Inventory scores, depressed women were differentiated only in their ability to generate alternatives and provide viable solutions to prob- lems. The results are discussed in terms of difficulties with problem defi- nition which might prompt a physician to prescribe, and the role of prob- lem solving deficiencies in drug use maintenance.

This essay represents an attempt to bring together literature from a variety of sources and develop it into an explanation and rationale for studying widowed women. Four factors are important in this regard: (1) the disproportionate number of widows vis-a-vis widowers, (2) the problems faced by widows and their accentuation as a result of prevailing societal norms and values, (3) the differences in response and adaptation to widowhood by sex, and (4) the more negative consequences, experienced by widowed women as compared to divorced women. Widows are more likely than other persons who have lost a spouse to work through the loss outside the context of remarriage and to develop single lifestyle adapta- tions with fewer available resources. The importance of social supports- both formal and informal-are paramount to their successful outcomes. To date these supports are weak and ineffective.

This paper-presents and evaluates an innovative approach for teaching medical students how to do a routine pelvic examination, emphasizing the patient-physician relationship. A questionnaire was ad- ministered to second year medical students in North Carolina before and after instruction by trained women from the nearby community. Commu- nication skills between physician and patient, patient education, giving patients options, and patient comfort were considered more necessary after the teaching experience. Students also felt considerably more able to perform the technical skills of the exam. The teaching was judged by almost all students as informative and competent. This study provides a strong rationale for using trained women from the community to teach medical students how to do routine pelvic examinations.

Significant excess cancer mortality among housewives com- pared to women employed outside the home in the Eugene, Oregon metro- politan area coilld not he confirmed in the Salem, Oregon metropolitan area. The household-associated excess cancer risk in the Eugene metro- politan area is most likely a local environmental phenomenon and not a general occupational risk for housewives as initially suspected. A hy- pothesis is proposed for magnetic field' exposure from household electric heating loops in a community with cheap electric power.

Far a sample of white women aged 45-64, women who were out of the labor force had poorer self-reported health and higher mortality than women who were in the labor force. It has been hypothesized that women who are out of the labor force may tend to exaggerate their poor health in self-report data. However, no evidence of bias of this type was found in an analysis of the relationships between self-reported health and subsequent mortality. The validity of self-reports of illness as a reason for not seeking work has been assessed using data for a sample of 30-44 year old women who were out of the labor force. Over 90% of the women who gave illness or disability as their main reason for not seeking work had previous or contemporaneous independent, self-report evidence of poor health. The findings of this study and previous evidence indicate that poor health reduces the likelihood that a woman will join the labor force, and this is a major reason why women who are not in the labor force have poorer health than those who are in the labor force.
