摘要:
While the number of mothers resuming employment soon after the birth of a child is growing, knowledge about the effect that having both a baby and a job has in mental and physical health is ill scarce. In this paper, we studied the health of 141 Italian first-time mothers, who were all employed during pregnancy. When their child was 15 months old, 84% were back at work; 24-36% suffered from lack of sleep, extreme tiredness and backache; more than half had experienced some feelings of depression since the birth. Considering the whole sample, poorly educated and unmarried mothers reported more physical health problems. Being employed per se showed no influence, but poorly educated mothers and those with a less qualified job reported more problems. On the basis of our results, we suggest that future research on new mothers, work and health should systematically include "domestic" variables and the characteristics of the paid job; and should analyze more thoroughly the influence of marriage status and educational level on health.

摘要:
Women veterans represent a rapidly growing segment of the veteran population. This study examines how the utilization of VA hospitals by women veterans has changed since 1980. Information on the use of VA hospitals was obtained from the discharge database for all VA hospitals. The demographics of the veteran population was compiled from the Veteran Population Files, which contain annual estimates of the number of veterans by age and sex. The VA hospital discharge rate for women increased nearly 29 percent during the 1980's while the VA user rate increased nearly 18.6 percent for women. The increase in the average number of VA stays per user was smaller for women than for men (8.4 percent versus I1 percent). Substantial increases in the utilization of VA hospitals by women veterans occurred during the 1980's. In most cases these increases were larger for women veterans than for men veterans. However, women veterans still use VA hospitals at about one-half the rate for men. Regardless, the VA system will continue to be an important source of health care for women.

摘要:
Although the influx of women into formerly entirely male-dominated professions has attracted much commentary from members of these professions, little investigation of the consequences of rapid, large-scale feminization has been undertaken for particular professions. The results of a pilot study in Canadian pharmacy suggest that fears of shortages due to women working part-time while they raise their children, are unfounded. However, swey results suguest that women are differentially drawn into pharmacies run by corporations rather than independent businesses: This may allow them to reorient pharmacy away from its business base and towards its chosen new professional jurisdiction of counselling. On the other hand, the independent pharmacy, that traditi&ally attracted males, may bring with it less control by pharmacists over what they do in everyday practice. The possibility that similar processes are operating in other feminizing professions with entrepreneurial components, such as dentistry and optometry, should be investigated.

摘要:
The effects of ethnicily and socioeconomic status on the use of screening mammograms were assessed for a probability sample of Chamorro, Filipino, White, and other Asian and Pacific island women residing on Guam. Using logistic regression analysis, we found that socioeconomic status significantly influenced the use of screening mammograms among Chamorro and Filipino women while strong ethnic effects remained for other Asian and Pacific island women. Age had a significant influence of the use of screening mammograms. Marital status and having a young child in the home were not significant predickx variables.

摘要:
Health promotion behaviors were examined in a sample of low-income, Black and Latino women. Latino women were more likely ban Black women to eat a daily brealdast; sleep 7-8 hours per night and abstain from alcohol and tobacco use. Black women were more likely to be eating vegetables on a regular basis and exercising at least once per week. The results suggest that low income Latino women may need to increase their consumption of vegetables and frequency of exercise. Among Black women, a wider range of healthy lifestyle behaviors such as sleeping eight hours per night, eating a daily breakfast and decreasing alcohol and tobacco consumption may need to be emphasized.

摘要:
The theme that emotions following miscarriage are more varied and less uniformly negative than accounts imply is examined through a review of popular and professional literature and evidence from sixty-five women who had had spontaneous abortions who were interviewed about their experiences and emotions. Emotions remembered from immediately following the miscarriage were sadness, frustration, disappoinment, and anger towards themselves. At the interview time, about four months after the miscarriage, the most common emotions were hopefulness, sadness, and happiness. Implications for health care and research are discussed.

摘要:
ABSTRACT. Depression rates in women are twice that of men In certain groups of women depression exceeds 40 percent. These groups include urban, poor, young mothers, and women who use primary health care facilities. We hypothesized that rates of depressive symptoms in rural women users of primary care would exceed those reported in population studies. Depressive symptoms were expected to be associated with common risk factors for depression. To test these hypotheses, 181 rural women, ages 18 to 52, were interviewed by telephone using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Of these, 41.4 percent reported depressive symptoms exceeding the cutoff score of 16 on the CES-D. The mean CES-D score for the entire sample was 15.3 and was 27.6 for women scoring over 16 on the CES-D. Young, unemployed and poorly educated women were most likely to report depressive symptoms.
