摘要:
SUMMARY:The generation times of individualEscherichia colicells inoculated on to a cellophane membrane and supplied with a liquid synthetic medium were determined by direct observation for four generations. Viability increased and generation time decreased with increasing age of population.

摘要:
SUMMARY:A method described for the demonstration of penicillinase production by staphylococci, a modification of that described by Voureka&Hughes (1949), is less laborious than the original and gives results which are readily interpreted.

摘要:
SUMMARY:The preparation and use of tellurite‐egg agar (TEA), a medium for the isolation of coagulase positive staphylococci, are described. The medium, based on that of Ludlam (1949), was non‐inhibitory to coagulase positive staphylococci and colonies on it of these organisms could easily be distinguished from contaminating types. Comparisons were made between the medium and three other media in common use for the isolation of coagulase positive staphyloco

摘要:
SUMMARY:Strain B7ofB. subtilis, isolated from soil collected from the gardens of the Bose Institute, Calcutta, was found to elaborate at least four different antibiotic substances. Fraction I was a brick red amorphous powder with certain resemblances to the bacillomycin group of antibiotics, soluble in alcohols, pyridine, etc., but insoluble in ether, water and acids. It had an ultraviolet absorption maximum at 276 mμ, melted with decomposition at 311°, and was a polypeptide positive to ninhydrin. On hydrolysis 12 amino acids were found. Fraction II was a white amorphous powder soluble in alcohols and ether but insoluble in water and petroleum ether. It melted at 158–162° and was a ninhydrin positive polypeptide composed of 7 amino acids. Fraction III was a yellow amorphous powder soluble in water and acetone, less soluble in ether and practically insoluble in chloroform. It was not a polypeptide. Fraction IV was a yellowish white amorphous powder with solubility characteristics similar to those of fractions I and II. It was a polypeptide composed of 10 amino a

摘要:
SUMMARY:Recirculation through a free‐standing electrostatic air filter reduced considerably the bacterial population of the air of a small hospital room, particularly during periods of nursing activity. It is suggested that it may be of real value as a further means of combating hospital cross infectio

SUMMARY:The inhibition by tannins of sulphate‐reducing bacteria in pure culture has been shown to be due primarily to the establishment of an unfavourable pH. High concentrations were required to inhibit when the physico‐chemical conditions were otherwise favoura

摘要:
SUMMARY:An improved growth medium for lactobacilli is described. It supports good growth of lactobacilli generally and also is particularly useful for a number of fastidious strains which grow only poorly in other general media. In addition, tomato juice, a highly variable material, is not required. In a slightly modified form, it can also be used as a basal medium for fermentation tests.

摘要:
SUMMARY:Spores of two strains ofBacillus stearothermophiluswere heated for various times both in the absence and presence of nisin and in the latter case both with and without subsequent destruction of the nisin with trypsin. The results obtained on enumeration of the survivors indicated that the reduction of heat resistance which was observed was apparent rather than real and was due to the adsorption of nisin on the spores. When this was removed by means of trypsin the heat resistance was restored almost to normal.
