Summary.Specimens of plant foliage and flowers collected in the region of Attica from various situations and geographical regions were examined over a period of 13 months for the presence of coli‐aerogenes bacteria able to grow at 37°. Twenty‐five (12.2%) of 204 specimens carried coli‐aerogenes bacteria of whichEscherichia colitype I was isolated from 12 (5.8%). Coli‐aerogenes bacteria were seldom isolated from plants grown in uninhabited areas, and they occured more frequently during summer and autumn.Vegetables and fruits sold in the central market of Athens are frequently contaminated with coli‐aerogenes bacteria. Of 76 specimens of vegetables examined 66 (86.8%) were positive for coli‐aerogenes bacteria, and 17 (22.3%) forE. colitype I. The figures from 41 specimens of fruits were 26 (65.8%) and 4 (9.7%),

Summary.Attempts to sterilize fresh cod fillets with ethylene oxide resulted in protein denaturation with the commensurate exudation of soluble tissue materials. The bacterial colony forming units were reduced to a level of between zero and 100/g of tissue, but sterilization was never achieved. Freeze dried cod fillet sections treated with ethylene oxide and reconstituted with sterile Ringer's solution gave a sterile product which when inoculated with a natural bacterial flora produced normal spoilage odours.

Summary.The antigenic structure of a stable asporogenic variant of the M8 strain ofBacillus cereushas been compared with that of the parent strain. Ultrasonic extracts of cells of both parent strain and variant harvested at different ages have been analysed by immunoelectrophoresis against antisera prepared by injecting such extracts into rabbits.Disintegrates of cells of the asporogenic variant were antigenically identical with disintegrates of vegetative cells of the parent strain. Disintegrates of cells in later stages of sporulation and of mature spores of the parent strain contained thermostable antigens which were never detected in the variant. Antigens of isolated cell walls, protoplasts and flagella were also studied.Examination of esterase and catalase content of the two strains showed that although the variant had the same enzymes as the young vegetative cells of the parent strain it never developed the thermostable catalase found in disintegrated spores. Protein components of the two strains at different stages of growth and of the isolated cell fractions were studied by electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gels.

Summary.The spoilage microflora of irradiated and non‐irradiated air packed or vacuum packed haddock fillets was identified after storage of the fillets at 35°F. Summary.Mycelium concentration and culture volume measurements in continuous cultures are affected by accretions of filamentous organisms at the overflow weir. A pinch valve is described which periodically closed the air and culture effluent tube. When released the outrush of air cleared the overflow system. With the device the standard deviations of the steady state mycelium dry weights were reduced to one third of their former value and progressive concentration of the organism was eliminated. Measurement of culture volume was corrected for gas retained in the mycelial mass.

Summary.Vibrio fetuscan be successfully freeze dried using the growth from thioglycollate blood agar. This medium is unsatisfactory for estimating the numbers of surviving organisms after freeze drying and storage. For this purpose a liquid medium containing 0.05% agar has been satisfactory. The long term storage of lyophilized preparations ofV. fetushas not been fully investigated.
