Summary.Micro‐organisms in activated sludge oxidizing thiocyanate behave in a similar way to thiobacilli. Organic compounds such as pyruvate stimulate thiocyanate oxidation and in so doing become incorporated into cellular material; such metabolites are not oxidized to produce energy. The presence of thiocyanate in batch cultures accelerated pyruvate uptake. The carbon of thiocyanate is recovered mainly as CO2; carbonate becomes incorporated into cellular protein, but less so in sludges previously treated with pyruvate. Summary.Some of the factors contributing to the loss of viability of V5 contagious bovine pleuropneumonia vaccine in BVFOS medium during storage were investigated. Results showed that: 1, some types of rubber stoppers were highly toxic toMycoplasma mycoides; 2, loss of viability was greater when the vaccine was stored in smaller bottles and was related to the proportionately greater air space; 3, the addition of glycerol to BVFOS medium resulted in slightly better survival during storage at 37° but decreased survival at 4°; 4, small bottles can be filled to higher levels, and the air space reduced, if the mouth of the bottle is protected during incubation by a metal cover instead of a cotton wool plug. It is recommended that the amount of air space should not exceed 40% of the volume of the bottle, the vaccine should be stoppered with non‐toxic stoppers after incubation and the BVFOS medium should not be supplemented with glycerol. Summary.Semi‐quantitative studies on serial gastro‐intestinal aspirates taken at laparotomy showed an increase in both numbers and types of organisms on passing down the baboon intestine from stomach to colon. In baboons fed a natural diet of fresh fruit and vegetables, the stomach, duodenum, and jejenum were sparsely populated, the flora consisting mainly of yeasts and lactobacilli, together with small numbers of faecal streptococci, micrococci and staphylococci. The mid‐ileum was more heavily populated, yeasts, lactobacilli and faecal streptococci being present in most samples, while lactose‐fermenting enterobacteria were isolated from half the aspirates, and in some, small numbers of micrococci, staphylococci andClostridium welchiiwere present. The caecum and colon aspirates were heavily populated with all the organisms mentioned above. Differences between the intestinal flora of baboons fed the natural diet and baboons fed a synthetic diet were similar to the difference noted previously (Uphill, 1973) for the faecal flora. Summary.The production of staphylococcal enterotoxins A, B, C, D and E among 200 strains ofStaphylococcus aureuswas surveyed using a double diffusion immunoprecipitation technique. Enterotoxin A was found to occur most frequently and enterotoxin B least frequently. The distribution of enterotoxigenicity in strains isolated from meat products differed from that of strains isolated from dairy products. The correlations of porcine plasma coagulation and of bacteriophage pattern with enterotoxigenicity were determined.

Summary.Human volunteers were given orally 0, 50 or 1000 mg of tetracycline/day for the 4 days preceding and the 5 days following ingestion of 1–2 x 106cells of tetracycline resistantEscherichia colistrain x‐314 of bovine origin. Of those receiving 0, 50 or 1000 mg of tetracycline/day, 9/13, 5/9 and 12/13, respectively, excreted the organism at least once during the 25‐day sampling period. Significant differences were not observed between subjects receiving 0 or 50 mg of tetracycline/day with respect to the length of time the coliform was recovered from faeces, or the maximum proportion of the total coliforms found to beE. colix‐314. Those receiving 1000 mg of tetracycline/day shedE. colix‐314 for longer periods and the latter's contribution to the coliform population was greater than in those subjects receiving 0 or 50 mg of tetracycline/day.
