Summary.Salmonella choleraesuiswas examined for growth in selenite, tetrathionate, brilliant green‐MacConkey and nutrient broths. Six strains ofSalm. choleraesuisand 8 ofSalm. choleraesuisvar.kunzendorfwere used. Selenite and tetrathionate broths failed to allow growth, especially when the inoculum was small. A modified tetrathionate broth in which half the normal amount of iodide was added was similar to nutrient broth, and brilliant green‐MacConkey broth was also highly effective. Summary.The oxytetracycline‐glucose‐yeast extract agar of Mossel, Visser&Mengerink (1962) for the selective enumeration of moulds and yeasts in foods has been extensively tested on 4000 samples of various materials in two food microbiology and one clinical laboratory. Its performance was excellent in that it suppressed entirely the growth of Bacillaceae. Summary.The spleens, kidneys and livers of mice that had received intraperitoneal doses of norethindrone and/or mestranol before intravenous injection with virulentStaphylococcus aureuscontained fewer viable staphylococci than did the corresponding organs of control mice. Also, fewer hormone treated mice than control animals died during the 4 days after infection. Both groups survived better when penicillin was administered 12 h after infection. Thirteen serotypes ofStaph. aureusgrew better in sera of control rabbits than in sera of rabbits treated with both hormones. Rabbits treated with either hormone alone yielded sera that suppressed growth of most, but not all, serotypes. Coagulase, phosphatase, gelatinase, anaerobic and aerobic acid production were not affected by prior growth of staphylococci in the presence of hormones, but the haemolysin titres of staphylococci grown with the hormones were lower than those grown without them.

Summary.The lipid composition ofMicrobacterium thermosphactumhas been investigated. The major phospholipids were phosphatidylglycerol, bis‐phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine. The glycolipid fraction contained an acylated glucose and trace amounts of a glycosyl diglyceride, tentatively identified as dimannosyl diglyceride. The fatty acid components of the lipids were predominantly C15and C17branched chain isomers. Summary.An interim determinative scheme for phytopathogenicPseudomonasspp. by a variety of cultural and biochemical tests was suggested by Lelliott, Billing&Hayward (1966) following the study of 156 green fluorescent phytopathogenic pseudomonads. The phage sensitivity of these and 80 additional cultures to 20 phages from a variety of sources are described. Information on the morphology of these phages is now available (Bradley, 1963a). A few nutritional tests which seem to be of diagnostic value at the species level are also included and a relationship between the presence of a heat stable antigen (Lovrekovichet al., 1963) and phage sensitivity patterns is discussed.

Summary.The characteristics of 12 isolates from 7 different hosts which were believed to bePseudomonas viridiflavawere studied using a variety of cultural and biochemical tests; in nutritional tests, 135 compounds were screened for their ability to serve as sole carbon and energy (C/E) sources. All cultures were similar in character and resembled closely Burkholder's original isolates: they were distinguishable from 13 cultures of other phytopathogenicPseudomonasspp. Although they closely resembledPs. syringae, they could be distinguished by their ability to rot potato, to utilized(—) tartrate as sole C/E source and by their failure to utilize sucrose and to form levan on 5% sucrose nutrient agar.Pseudomonas viridiflavais a common epiphyte at least on dwarf beans (Scarlett, 1968) though it has rarely been cited as a cause of disease inPhaseolusspp. Results of lesion tests in dwarf bean pods and in the tobacco hypersensitivity test together with pectolytic activity strongly suggest however that it is a potential pathoge

Summary.The effect of hibernation on the caecal flora of the thirteen‐lined ground squirrel (Citellus tridecemlineatus) was determined by comparing the flora of 7 active squirrels with that of 6 × 6 days hibernators and 2 × 42 days hibernators. Direct microscopical examination showed the presence of a wide variety of micro‐organisms, including protozoa in all the animals. Using strict anaerobic techniques it was possible to isolate>60% of the total flora of the active squirrels but onlyc.30% in the hibernators. Several distinct types of anaerobic Gram negative, nonsporing rods predominated in both the active and hibernating animals. Gram positive, nonsporing rods and coccobacilli were present in the active squirrels but were not isolated from the 42 days hibernators. Summary.A strain ofSalmonella senftenbergand a strain ofSalm. bedfordhave been found withD60°values similar to that of the classical heat resistant salmonella,Salm. senftenbergstrain 775W.
