At high concentrations barban, its commercial formulation Carbyne or the formulating solvent, initially increased soil respiration. Increased respiration due to Carbyne or the solvent was accompanied by bacterial proliferation in response to the organic carbon of the solvent. There was no initial increase in bacterial population in barban‐treated soil. Soil respiration was inhibited after Carbyne treatment during the later stages of incubation (up to 220 days) despite a bacterial population larger than in untreated soil. Barban and Carbyne depressed the rate of glucose utilization and increased phosphatase activity in soil; it is suggested that barban interferes with the respiratory processes of soil micro‐organisms. Low concentrations (2 parts/106) of 3‐chloroaniline were detected in soil treated with either barban or Carbyne. The antibacterial activity of povidone iodine was examinedin vitroin saline, in nutrient broth, in simulated ulcer experiments and in the presence of blood components. Minimum inhibitory and minimum bactericidal concentrations were within a narrow concentration range. Nutrient broth and plasma had little inactivating activity but 1 g haemoglobin inactivated 50 mg of free iodine: experiments with125I showed that uptake of iodine by red cells occurred rapidly. Optimal antimicrobial effects in clinical use should be achieved in relatively blood‐free situations. Povidone iodine produced a potent, and sometimes persistent bactericidal effect towards bacteria on healthy skin. It is suggested that antiseptics such as povidone iodine should continue to replace topical antibiotics for prevention and treatment of wound infectio

Strains ofStreptococcus cremoriswhich utilized peptides had a mercaptoethanol‐sensitive, Mg2+‐activated dipeptidase which could be released from the cells by lysozyme. A similar enzyme was inferred to be present inStrep. lactis.An apparently cell wall‐bound peptidase was only found inStrep. lactis; this was also Mg2+‐activated but was insensitive to mercaptoethanol. Five strains of uracil‐degrading clostridia were isolated from soil using an enrichment medium containing uracil as the principal energy source. Streptococci isolated from the dental plaque of five animal species were identified by physiological and serological methods. Twenty‐nine strains of streptococci considered to resembleStreptococcus mitiororStrep. bovison the basis of physiological data reacted with Lancefield group B or group K antisera respectively in tube precipitation tests. Further serological studies with standardized antigens from known serogroup B and K streptococci revealed that only three of these 29 isolates had been serogrouped accurately and carried the appropriate group antigen. Comparisons were made between the reactivity of the antisera produced by Difco and Wellcome Reagents with acid and autoclaved extracts of the strains. Two nitrogen‐fixing members of the Enterobacteriaceae have been isolated from paper mill process water and compost. Although they closely resembledEscherichia coli, detailed biochemical characterization of these and 7 other isolates established that they should be assigned to a biotype ofErwinia herbicola. They may be distinguished fromE. coliby their lack of amino acid decarboxylase activity, their ability to utilize cellobiose and malonate and to ferment cellobiose and amygdalin. In one of them, the capacity to fix nitrogen, ferment cellobiose and utilize malonate was resistant to the effects of ethidium bromide, acridine orange and sodium dodecyl sulphate, and the ability to utilize cellobiose could not be transferred on toE. coliorSalmonella typhi. It is therefore concluded that these characters are not carried on transferable plasmids. Forty‐eight strains ofE. coliof varying origin were examined for acetylene reducing activity and all were found to be negative.
