SUMMARY:Deoxyribonucleic acid (final concentration 100 μg/ml) extracted from wild‐type cells ofMethylococcus capsulatuswas used to transform ap‐amino benzoic acid (PABA) requiring strain (paba‐). Maximum levels of transformants were obtained towards the end of the exponential phase of growth in shake flask culture and the level of the population of transformants was not significantly altered by post‐treatment incubation in enriched medium. The maximum transformation frequency was 0.17% of the initial population of PABA requiring cells and the back mutation frequency was 1 : 3.

SUMMARY:A strain ofAcinetobacter Iwoffii, isolated from a stored sample of distilled water, hydrolysed acetylsalicylic acid to salicylic and acetic acids. It grew in mineral salts medium with either of these compounds as C source and NH4+as N source. Experiments with whole cells and cell free extracts and the isolation of intermediates showed that acetylsalicylic acid was metabolized through salicylic acid, catechol,cis‐cis‐muconic acid, (+)‐muconolactone and β‐oxoadipic acid. The salicylate hydroxylase required NADH or NADPH as cofactor and 1 mole of O2was taken up and 1 mole of CO2evolved for each mole of salicylate oxidized. SUMMARY:The responses of various groups of Gram negative, yellow pigmented rods constructed on the basis of classical criteria to a wide range of cultural and biochemical features were examined. The occurrence of a wide area of slime surrounding true growth with isolates which may spread but did not glide is described. The correlation between the classical groups and divisions suggested on the basis of pigment absorption curves was examined.

SUMMARY:Of 4 methods of assessing the bacteriological quality of mussels the semiquantitative method of the Fishmongers’Company was the most useful from the public health aspect where facilities may be limited. A modification of Clegg&Sherwood's method, using pour plates, was more sensitive and more simple to perform than the original method and is to be recommended for routine use. SUMMARY:Treatment with formaldehyde during laundering conferred a persistent residual disinfectant action on wool blankets but not on cotton ones. The former was shown by a slower rate of bacterial contamination of blankets during use or by the more rapid disappearance of nonsporing bacteria from contaminated blankets during storage. The formaldehyde treated blankets had no perceptible odour during use, and did not cause irritation of the skin or mucous membranes. It is suggested that the formaldehyde treatment of wool blankets might be worthy of trial as a means of reducing bacterial contamination in rooms occupied by patients with a high risk of infection.

SUMMARY:The survival ofEscherichia coliand spores ofBacillus subtilisvar.nigerandB. stearothermophilussuspended in halocarbon propellents for several weeks has been demonstrated. There was no significant loss of dipicolinic acid from the spores. Lethal action may be due to interaction of the propellents with cellular lipid.
