Milk powders (37 samples) from five different processing centres (A, B, C, D and E) were examined for total viable counts, total staphylococcal counts and staphylococcal enterotoxins. All powders from centres A, B and C contained low numbers of total viable bacteria and staphylococci but five from centres D and E had high total and staphylococcal counts. Nine different staphylococcal species were encountered in low count powders with a wide range of species occurring at each of the five centres. Three species (Staphylococcus capitis, Staph. saprophyticusandStaph. cohnii) were found whose natural hosts are humans. High count powders all contained added fat of various types and had a much more restricted staphylococcal microflora in whichStaph. saprophyticusand Staph. cohnii predominated. None of 384 staphylococcal strains isolated were found to beStaph. aureus.In addition, no enterotoxins were detected.

Malassezia furfurstrains were isolated from the clinically normal skin of 10 volunteers by swabbing four different sites (forehead, ear, back and chest). The strains could be divided into three basic groups on the basis of cultural characteristics. Both unabsorbed and absorbed specific rabbit antisera were prepared against nine of the strains, and both species and group specific antigens could be demonstrated. Serologically, three group specific surface antigens could be identified which corresponded to the three groups identifiable on cultural characteristics. The relevance of these findings to previousin vitroresults is discussed.

Media for yeast identification tests were incorporated into the wells of a microtitre tray. The tests included fermentation and assimilation of carbohydrates, assimilation of nitrogen compounds, growth in vitamin‐free medium, resistance to cycloheximide, and observations for cell morphology and sporulation. Chloramination which is used in South Australia to control the growth ofNaegleria fowleri, was investigated to see if it would also control that ofLegionella pneumophila. It was found thatL. pneumophilawas more sensitive thanEscherichia colito monochloramine. At 1.0 mg/l, a 99% kill ofL. pneumophilawas achieved in 15 min compared with 37 min for a 99% kill ofE. coli.Combined with the stability of monochloramine, even at elevated temperatures, the results suggest that this disinfectant would control the growth ofL. pneumophilain water distribution systems.

The effects of exposure of spores ofBacillus globigiiNCTC 10073 to controlled levels of formaldehyde vapour under varying environmental conditions are reported. The death rate of the micro‐organism varies with the humidity and formaldehyde concentration and can be predicted for conditions within the limits of the information available. The currently recommended methods for the formaldehyde fumigation of rooms have been studied with the aid of an instrument designed to monitor the temperature, humidity and formaldehyde concentration. The results show that although the procedures are generally effective as measured by microbiological methods the conditions within the areas treated are not those expected from calculations based on the room volume and the amount of formaldehyde used. The measured formaldehyde levels in particular are much lower than predicted and indicate that formaldehyde vapour may be effective at lower concentrations than previously supposed.

The conditions of ultrasonication to recover micro‐organisms from material surfaces are not standardized and often not validated. This leads to discrepancies in experimental results which can affect the sterilization dose setting, cycle development and process validation, and can have an impact on sterilization processing economics and product sterile quality. The sample loading pattern, species of micro‐organism, materials and configurations of sample containers were examined under defined conditions. All of these were found to be important factors contributing to the efficiency of microbial recovery from material surfaces by ultrasonication.
