摘要:
Aerodetic or“dividing the atmosphere” reasoning shows that altimetry in low flying and landing aircraft would become both safer and easier with charts of D‐values and S‐values on the earth's surface and by eliminating the use of altimeter settings. Conveniently effective flight planning is also shown to depend upon aerodetic charts of D‐values and S‐values at vertical intervals of one nautical mile of barometric altitude. A nautical foot, equal to 6000 of a nautical mile, is proposed for international altimetric use so that these charts can be prepared by weather services and can be fully utilize

摘要:
AbstractAmethodis given for determining optimum ship routes on a digital computer. This paper is limited to the problem of determining minimum time courses when the speed is a known function of the position, heading, and time. The method is based on Bliss's methods for calculating differentials, usually applied in a Newton iteration to determine the course. It is very general, but it requires a knowledge of Bliss's adjoint methods. The paper is self‐contained; a simple case is given in detail and others outlined. The advent of highspeed digital computers in the past few years now makes the solution of such problems feasibl

AbstractOptical and midcourseguidance and navigation requirements for the lunar mission are outlined. Techniques for meeting these requirements using an on‐board guidance system are briefly described. Investigation of phenomena capable of providing navigation measurements are summarized. Instrumentation for possible use in orbital and midcourse navigation sightings is generally describe

摘要:
AbstractGround effect machines(gems) are expected to play an important military and commercial role in the coming years. Practical machines have already been built and more are planned. These include GEM aircraft carriers and ocean liners capable of extremely high speeds. Supersonic vehicles of this type are foreseen for the 1980–90 era. Navigation requirements for fast ground effect machines differ from those for manned aircraft, missiles, orbital vehicles, or conventional ships. These differences and the reasons for them are discussed. Specific requirements for GEM navigation are delineated. It is shown how existing aids to navigation can be integrated into GEM navigation systems. A discussion of the part that might be played by navigation satellites such as Transit is included. The equipment needed by a fast (500 knots) GEM capable of transoceanic all‐weather operation is outlined. On this basis, a prediction is made about the GEM guidance and navigation systems of the future. A brief account of the history of GEMs and a description of some of the machines now operational or planned is inclu
