AbstractTHE COMPOSITION of a self‐contained navigation system is discussed. It is shown that the over‐all accuracy of the system is dependent on the accuracy of its major components, the velocity sensor, the computer, and the heading reference, and can be no better than that of its poorest component. A method of determining the position error of Doppler navigation systems is described which is based on the component errors and on statistical considerations. Sample calculations for four typical systems are presented. The maximum (95% probability) position errors are found to range from 0.54 to 3.24% of distance traveled for the systems selected. The historical behavioral performance of the three major components of a Doppler navigation system are analyzed and presented graphically. AbstractINERTIAL navigation and Doppler navigation are two recent developments of extreme importance, particularly in military applications. Each is a method of determining the position and velocity of a moving vehicle, and each has limitations resulting from the components which make up the system. The characteristics of various forms of combined navigation systems have been investigated. As well as being of practical importance, this is an interesting example of the general problem of determining the optimum combination of two measurements of the same quantity. The methods of Wiener filter theory can be applied, although the inherent presence of transfer functions corresponding to undamped systems necessitates care in using this theory. In certain cases, particularly where the greatest accuracy is desired, the resulting system offers distinct advantages over either Doppler or inertial separately; while in other cases the additional complication of two systems does not appear justified.
