AbstractThe advent of businessjets and light jet transports, flown by two‐man crews, has greatly increased the need for cockpit workload simplification. This paper describes salient features of the Omnigraph airborne navigation equipment, which has been designed to simplify to the maximum extent possible, the acquisition and presentation of navigational information for the pilot. The airborne installation includes a small digital computer, and a closed‐loop pictorial display which forms the digital‐to‐analogue output element and also serves as a means of feeding geographical waypoint position data into the computer. Equipment checkout and setup, as well as chart and facility selection, are rendered virtually automatic. AbstractProblemsof clear air turbulence (CAT) are surveyed. A definition of CAT and categories of different types of CAT are proposed. The inadequacy of mesoscale forecasting of CAT, and the seeming impossibility of micro‐scale forecasting of CAT, point to the necessity for an airborne device for advance detection of CAT. Observational research in the physics and meteorology of CAT is needed. Possible CAT detection methods are summarized. Requirements for a detection device are enumerated. AbstractSeveral configurationsof hyperbolic position fixing systems using synchronous satellites are formulated and examined. The Loran‐like networks of spherical hyperbolas on the earth that result from these configurations are shown, from which the coverage area and crossing angles of the lines of position are easily visualized. The propagation of errors in both the pure satellite system and the satellite‐ground station hybrids is then described analytically by a single set of position error equations. Major problems in implementing these system concepts are anticipated and possible ways of solving them are suggested. The variability and accuracy with which the system parameters will be known to various classes of users are estimated, and these are combined in the error analysis to give an indication of the fix accuracy which can be expected.
