ABSTRACTAt the Royal Institute of Navigation conferences NAV 84 and NAV 85, considerable interest was shown in the achievement of standardization in expressing navigational accuracy. As a result, permission was sought and granted to publish the NATO Standardization Agreement on the subject in the Journals of all IAIN members. The text of the Agreement is hereby presented.

ABSTRACTMany types of gravity surveys have been conducted or proposed to support very accurate inertial navigation. For example, gravimetry and satellite altimetry data now exist over many areas of the world and new techniques are being developed such as satellite‐to‐satellite tracking and airborne gravity gradiometry. This paper presents a universal approach for analyzing the navigation system improvements afforded by these surveys. Comparisons are shown of the navigation RMS errors for five survey methods. ABSTRACTOne of the most important factors affecting the success of an oceanographic survey operation is the careful planning and execution of a systematic survey plan. The features of this plan are based on numerous considerations, including platform sensor capabilities, navigation capabilities, the nature of the target or bottom, environmental conditions, operating resources, and operational limitations. Although many of these factors are unique to each individual operation, the goal of obtaining adequate sensor coverage should be a common element of every plan. This paper addresses the factors affecting sensor coverage in parallel lane surveys, and offers a technique for optimizing survey plan parameters to accomplish sensor coverage goals most efficiently.
