AbstractIncreased levels of benzoic acid‐precipitable aromatic compounds and glycoprotein‐associated peptide material are found in the urines of patients with schizophrenic psychoses and endogenous depressions. Factors with regulatory effects on aminergic transmission have been found. A working hypothesis is proposed whereby genetically determined peptidase insufficiency interacts with increased peptide levels of either endogenous and/or exogenous origin to cause the psychotic state. AbstractNoise‐induced hearing loss due to intense and long‐term noise exposure is no longer disputed since the etiology is well defined. However, the influence of noise on the vegetative functions is not so clear. In addition to existing investigations on vegetative functional disturbances, the role of noise as a risk factor has to be determined and its effects have to be quantified. The significance of noise‐induced sleep disturbances in relation to health and well‐being, is also controversial. The hypothesized causal connection between acoustical stimulation and the occurrence of disorders, includes primary‐effects (e.g. awakenings) and after‐effects (e.g. changes in mood or performance). To date, it has not been feasible to determine late after‐effects, such as health disorders. The most often reported sociopsychological effect of noise is general annoyance, whereby annoyance is defined as disturbance of communication, rest, recreation or concentration. AbstractThis article reviews a number of studies which have examined the possible impact of political violence on psychiatric morbidity in Northern Ireland. A brief introduction outlining the way in which the violence has varied spatially, quantitatively and qualitatively since 1969 also draws attention to other possible stressors in Northern Irish society. This is followed by a detailed review of studies which have analysed either admission and referral rates, suicide and attempted suicide rates, trends in psychotropic drug prescribing or data from community‐based studies. The criticism is made that several of the early studies did not pay enough attention to important sociodemographic factors and therefore are open to interpretations other than those originally proposed. Nevertheless some agreement does emerge suggesting that it is unlikely that the political violence caused any marked increase in serious psychiatric illnesses but rather stimulated an increase in normal anxiety, particularly among the more vulnerable and especially those with a previous history. AbstractAlthough Slimnastics appears on the surface to tackle only the straightforward subjects of exercise, healthy eating, relaxation and tension control, as well as lifestyle (as it relates directly to health), and to deal with them through classes which are fun and uncomplicated, in fact all the aspects are scientifically based. The whole concept is built on Maslow's hierarchy of motivation (or human needs). This article hopes to show the arguments and illustrations that prove the success of this idea in practice. Slimnastics is a concept which not only works extremely well but is also simple to put into operation.

AbstractUsing alcohol to cope with stress is a common reason for drinking, and alcohol has the pharmacological capability of reducing states of tension when used in moderate doses. This effect may, however, be dependent to some extent on the drinker's faith as to its anxiolytic powers.
