AbstractAlthough the incidence of eating disorders has been on the rise in the past decade, their etiology is still obscure and their treatment still unsatisfactory, with a relatively high mortality rate. This article describes a special subgroup of patients with an eating disorder whose underlying illness was a previously undiagnosed post‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Once the proper diagnosis was made and the therapy was focused on the proper resolution of the trauma and its effects, the patients showed improvement in their overall state of mind, including the eating disorder symptoms. It is hoped that this article will heighten the clinicians' awareness of this subgroup of eating disorder patients and improve the treatment outcom

AbstractA case‐control study exploring the long‐term effects of night and afternoon sleep on the occurrence of acute coronary heart disease (CHD) episodes was undertaken in Athens, Greece. The case series consisted of 97 consecutive male patients with an electro cardiographically confirmed CHD episode, admitted during a six‐month period in either of the two cardiologic clinics of the largest Greek teaching hospital. The control series consisted of 90 male orthopaedic, opthalmologic or urologic patients, free from clinical or electrocardiographic evidence of overt CHD, admitted to the same hospital at the same dates as the corresponding cases. All patients were interviewed and examined in the hospital wards during the first week of their hospitalization; the statistical analysis was done by multiple logistic regression, controlling for the confounding influences of socioeconomic variables and several established CHD risk factors. Four of the CHD cases, but none of the controls, reported occupations involving shift work; these patients were not included in subsequent sleep‐focused analyses. The duration of night sleep was shorter among CHD patients than among controls, but the regression‐adjusted difference was slight and statistically non‐significant. However, there was a strong, duration‐dependent and statistically significant association of afternoon sleep with the occurrence of (at least) non‐fatal CHD episodes, indicating that a 30‐minute siesta may be related with an almost 30 per cent reduction of the corresponding incidence rate. AbstractHypnosis is not a discipline to be thought of in isolation but is one of the techniques of psychotherapy, like abreaction, analysis, behaviour therapy, support and others, with which it may be combined. Hypnosis can often enhance the effect of other methods of treatment, and has no dangers apart from those inherent to psychotherapy. In the treatment of sexual dysfunction it is often, perhaps usually, necessary to interview and treat both partners, but this article is concerned with the role of hypnosis in this field; it will usually be employed with only one of the partners, and in some cases may be the only technique used. Hypnosis is useful in primary and secondary sexual dysfunction, and deserves wider recognition.

AbstractStress, especially of a chronic nature, poses problems for the health of people in contemporary societies. In consequence, there is an increasing need for emphasis on health education as a means of controlling and reducing stress in everyday life. AbstractFifty‐seven patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery were investigated pre‐ and postoperatively for changes in cognitive and perceptual functioning (delirium). Physical data were collected and personality and psychiatric assessments made using standard inventories. Manifestations of delirium were maximal by day 4 and had largely resolved by day 10. Cognitive deficit was significantly associated with a high score on ‘neuroticism’ and perceptual aberration, with increasing age and high scores on ‘dominant personality’ and ‘extraversion’.
