摘要:
AbstractThis study presents data on the reduction of verbal aggression of two clients with brain injury. In one client, the inappropriate verbal behavior was reduced by using behavioral contracts with the duration of up to 6 days. In the other client, restitution (apology), reinforcement, and response cost were used to reduce verbal aggression.

摘要:
AbstractThis study examined the effects of publicly‐posted performance feedback on the in‐hospital behavior of patients residing on a self‐management unit at a large, state operated, psychiatric treatment facility. When contrasted to a baseline phase in which staff received weekly information regarding patients' performance, scores in six of the eight assessment areas improved when this information was provided directly to patients. The authors' conclude that performance feedback may be a useful adjunct to inpatient treatment programs because it clarifies programmatic expectations, helps focus attention on developing strategies or interventions to meet those expectations, and encourages active treatment participation from patients and

摘要:
AbstractThe present study assessed the effect of teaching communicative gestures on the occurrence of self‐injurious behavior and other behavior disorders with 14 individuals who are severely/ profoundly mentally retarded. Results show a statistically significant decrease of about 40% in self‐injurious behavior as a collateral effect of an increased use of communicative gestures. Apart from a decrease in the occurrence of destructive behaviors, no other effects on other behavior disorders were found. Results are discussed in terms of the possible use of communicative gestures as a therapeutic supplement to standard procedures for decreasing self‐injurious behavior with individuals who are nonverbal and mentally ret

摘要:
AbstractAversive and deprivation procedures for controlling and reducing challenging behaviors have received increasing attention. Many states have adopted guidelines on the use of these procedures treating persons with developmental disabilities. The Minnesota state rule promulgated in October, 1987 requires reviews from both local and state‐wide review committees on permitted, but controlled procedures. Data generated from state‐wide committees revealed that (a) state operated regional treatment centers (RTCs) employed individual habilitative training programs with controlled procedures more frequently than community‐based agencies (b) a higher proportion of RTC submissions were for treatment of self‐injury than submissions from community services, and (c) RTCs had a higher usage of mechanical restraints than community facilities with both services settings using manual restraints more frequently than all other controlled procedures combined. Reasons for the above differences in the two service settings were di

摘要:
AbstractThis study investigated the efficacy of: (a) delayed feedback; (b) delayed feedback and social reinforcement; or (c) delayed feedback, social reinforcement, and tangible reinforcement for reducing the rate of bizarre motoric behaviors for 2 female and 1 male chronically institutionalized mental clients. These treatments were consecutively employed with each subject, utilizing a multiple baseline across subjects experimental design. Results indicated that these subjects were able to retain and understand the feedback on both their problem and alternative behaviors but that reductions in the inappropriate motoric behaviors resulted only when tangible reinforcers were included in the treatment. Implications for further investigations and for the utility and efficiency of delayed feedback and reinforcement with chronically institutionalized adults are discussed.

摘要:
AbstractThis article describes the use of response contingent brief social isolation (i.e., timeout) with 770 children admitted to an inpatient child psychiatry treatment unit during a 2‐year study period. A total of 2,256 timeouts were recorded during the study period. Preliminary normative frequency, duration, and reason for timeout information are reported for age and sex groups and for common diagnostic categories. Only a third (255) of the inpatients earned one or more timeouts during their hospitalization. The results suggest 2 trends for timeout in this inpatient setting. First, there was an inverse relationship between timeout frequency and subjects' age; i.e., frequency of timeouts tended to decrease as subjects' age increased. Second, there was a positive relationship between timeout duration and subjects' age; i.e., older subjects required longer timeouts. A third and tentative finding suggested that the frequency of timeout was differentially associated with primary diagnosis for some groups. Alternative treatment procedures are discusse
