AbstractThe purpose of this study was to determine the minimal components of a self‐management program necessary to increase positive interactions among staff and clients working in a vocational setting. Three interventions were implemented, as needed, in an additive fashion including: Instruction and Goal Setting, Self‐management, and Feedback. Instruction and Goal Setting did not increase staff positive interactions to a criterion level of 30% of intervals. However, during the self‐management phase, all staff increased their positive interactions with clients, but two staff required feedback to maintain their positive interactions at the criterion level. Measures of generalization, compliance, and acceptability showed that increases in positive interactions occurred outside the assessment sessions; staff were consistently employing the procedures; and staff found all procedures to be accep

AbstractThree individuals who were traumatically brain injured (TBI) demonstrated inappropriate sexual behaviors. All three participants engaged in touching the genitals of members of the opposite sex and one made sexual comments. In the first two cases, hourly feedback was used initially to reduce the touching. Next, behavior contracting was paired with feedback to further reduce it. In the third case, inappropriate touching and sexual comments were both decreased using only feedback.

AbstractDirect‐observation procedures were used to objectively and efficiently assess several classes of service provided for individuals residing at two state facilities for the developmentally disabled. Time samples were taken of the condition of the clients' physical environment and of the clients themselves. The ongoing behavior of both clients and staff also was recorded. Each residence was observed at least three times during both regular work hours and evening/weekend hours. Results showed that both facilities scored high in the categories regarding the physical condition of the living areas, as well as the categories concerning the condition of the clients. Greater variability was seen in the data on client and staff behavior. AbstractThis article reviews behavioral conceptualizations and approaches to the treatment of Tourette's Syndrome. The main purpose of the review is to point out the importance of associated aberrant behaviors that frequently coincide with Tourette's and discuss the efficacy of behaviour therapy as a viable option in the treatment of the disorder. There is discussion of past and present treatments, as well as comments on possible future directions in the behavioral treatment of the disorder.

AbstractTreatment of stereotypic hand mouthing in a 3‐year‐old girl with Rett syndrome by differential reinforcement of competing functional responses plus response interruption is described and evaluated in this case study. A package of graduated guidance with social and edible reinforcers successfully established stable rates of functional hand movements to activate toys, gross motor responses to verbal prompts, palmar grasp and release, and some vocal imitation. Contingent response interruption virtually eliminated hand mouthing during instructional sessions. Instruction alone did not maintain hand mouthing suppression when interruption was withdrawn, and treatment gains appeared highly discriminated.Post‐hoccomparison indicated differential reinforcement plus response interruption (DR1 + 1) to be superior to hand splints in reducing hand stereotypies, with approximately equivalent increases in collateral tongue thru

AbstractMany youth placed in out of home care have serious anger and aggression problems. These youth create much administrative and staff frustration. This frustration can cause program administrators to look to new treatment modalities whether inside or outside of their specific milieu for the therapeutic solutions to these problems. This randomized control group study provides an example of the importance of experimental program evaluation when an applied setting begins a drift towards the use of new treatment modalities. The results showed that both treatment and control groups improved over time but that there was no differences between groups in the daily number of angry incidents, the number of youth negatively terminated from the program, or self‐report of state‐trait anger expression. The results also suggest that without this research the noneffective intervention would have continued to be funded and given causative status for the observed improvements in referred youth behavior into the foreseeable future. Moreover, the development of these types of superstitious beliefs may lead child care organizations to spend scarce dollars on expensive treatments that do not increase the efficacy of the treatment as usual.
