摘要:
SUMMARYThe kinds of damage found onVarroa jacobsonilocated in worker brood, on adult honey bees, on the bottom board (floorboard) traps and in Gary traps, were investigated inApis mellifera ligusticacolonies. Light-coloured adult mites with damage to the cuticle of the idiosoma were found in the brood cells: 2.8% from undamaged mother mites and 17.9% from damaged mother mites. No mites with leg damage were found on adult honey bees. Mites in Gary traps showed more damage (45.9%) than those collected on the bottom boards (26.1 %).

摘要:
SUMMARYTwenty-seven stingless bee honeys from the west and south of Venezuela were examined for diastase (αandß-amylase) and invertase (α-glucosidase) activity Diastase activity (g starch hydrolysed/100 g honey/h) was very low in Meliponini andScaptotrigonaspp. honeys (2.6–3.5 diastase number), and much higher in other Trigonini honeys (6.6–35.6). Invertase activity (μmoles p-nitrophenyl glucopyranoside/kg honey/min) varied from 9.6 to 169.1 in Meliponini and from 15.9 to 214.3 in Trigonini honey, and was not statistically different in both groups. The correlation between diastase and invertase was very low, but both enzymes produced a dendrogram with two distinctive clusters for Meliponini and Trigonini honeys, excludingScaptotrigonaspp. The results suggest that the quality standards for stingless bee honeys will require a different approach for diastase activity. The use of diastase activity as an indicator of freshness, as is common practice forApis melliferahoneys, is not applicable for Meliponini andScaptotrigonaspp. honeys, which are lacking in diastase.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe previously published nucleotide sequence of complementary DNA (cDNA), coding for royal jelly protein RJP57-1, contained errors that were corrected by resequencing of the cDNA. The main error, the omission of a 108 bp (base pairs) long sequence on the 3' end of the cDNA was caused by misalignment of overlapping parts of the sequenced fragments in the region containing repetitive sequences. The updated sequence of RJP57-1 cDNA is 1807 bp long and encodes a protein with 544 amino acid residues including the signal peptide. The protein shows sequence homology over 385 residues with the yellow protein ofDrosophila melanogaster, which is involved in the process of melanin pigmentation ofDrosophilacuticle. The RJP57-1 protein sequence possesses a 100 amino acid residues long repetitive region consisting of a 20-fold repeated sequence motif XQNXX on its C-terminal part The repetitive region is interesting because of the regular distribution of cationic amino acid residues (arginine/lysine) in the last 14 repeats and the non-regular distribution of 10 residues of anionic aspartic acid throughout the whole repetitive region. According to computer analyses, the region possesses a structure of regularly pleated peptide chain. The hydrophilic character of the repetitive region and the supposed specific structure indicate that it could form a distinct structural domain located on the protein surface. The question of the possible function of RJP57-1 protein in the honey bee (Apis mellifera) is discussed on the basis of these new findings.

摘要:
SUMMARYSeveral experiments were conducted to examine the effects of exposure to CO2or CO2containing 20% O2on the amounts of biogenic amines in the brain, and on development of ovaries in worker and queen honey bees. When workers were fed pollen and exposed to CO2, their ovaries were less developed and brain dopamine (DA), tryptophan (TRP) and tyrosine (TYR) levels were significantly reducedversusuntreated controls that were also fed pollen. If workers were not fed pollen and exposed to CO2, the differences in brain amine content between untreated controls and CO2-treated workers were not significant; however, a significant reduction in brain TRP and TYR levels through time was found for both groups of workers. Treatment with CO2stimulated free-running queens to lay eggs sooner than untreated free-running queens, but CO2narcosis had no significant affect on queen brain chemistry. However, the brain chemistry of caged queens (many queens caged within a single colony) responded differently from free-running queens. Treatment with CO2caused a 45% reduction in dopamine levels in the brains of free-running queens, whereas dopamine levels of caged queens were not affected by treatment with CO2. This study shows that the brain dopamine levels of workers and queens do not change to the same degree in response to CO2treatment For workers, this study suggests a positive relationship between brain dopamine and the extent of ovarian development.
