SummaryTwo widely separated populations ofApis melliferaare found in the mountains of northern and southern Oman. By morphometric analysis it is shown that these bees are identical with each other and withA.m. jemeniticafrom North Yemen; a detailed description is given of the race. A close morphological relationship exists with bees from Sudan, but not the bees of Iran or Jordan.Details are given of the climate and the other ecological conditions in which the bees live. The biology and behaviour of the race are discussed with spécial reference to its potential suitability for modern beekeeping.

SummaryPositive correlations were found between net honey production and blood sugar levels in foraging workers of different honeybee races and hybrids. The highest correlation coefficient (+0·887) was found for glucose, followed by fructose (+0·832) and trehalose (+0·697). Levels of trehalose, unlike those of the hexoses, did not show effects of heterosis in triple hybrids.

SummaryMeasurements of blood juvenile hormone (JH), protein, and vitellogenin contents were carried out on adult queen honeybees during their first summer and winter and second summer, and with workers 12 and 25 days old. The JH titre was slightly higher in laying queens than in non-laying queens, but no higher than in workers.The titres of protein and vitellogenin were higher in queens than in workers, but no differences were obvious between laying queens and non-laying queens. No correlations were found between the titres of JH, protein and vitellogenin in queens. In both queens and workers the JH titre was positively correlated with age.

SummaryThe survival of virgin and mated queens in queenless and queenright reservoir colonies was studied during different seasons in a subtropical climate, for 5 years.In queenless reservoir colonies, 80% of mated queens survived for 5 months. In queenright reservoir colonies with two laying queens, 78% of mated queens survived for 2 months. In queenless or queenright compartments within queenright reservoir colonies, 69 to 91% of virgin queens survived for 5 months. About 78% of mated queens stored in a super with a laying queen, above a queenright brood nest, survived for 2 months.No seasonal differences in queen survival were observed, but an ample supply of young bees was necessary, also protection from heat and cold, and syrup feeding after the main citrus flow ended.Uses of reservoir colonies for storing queens for laboratory studies, for requeening commercial colonies, and for dealing with management problems, are set out.

SummaryRolled beeswax foundation of varying mass and number of cells per dm2was cut in three cell orientations, and tested mechanically in tensile and bending modes. The relative strength of the foundation was positively correlated with mass/dm2. The relative tensile strength, tensile stiffness, bending strength, and bending stiffness, were significantly greater in foundation oriented with cell walls horizontal instead of vertical. Comb-in-frame strength could therefore be enhanced considerably simply by changing the orientation of beeswax foundation sheets in conventional frames from the customary vertical orientation to a horizontal one.

SummaryThe tendency for bees to attach comb to sloping side-bars of frames diminished with increase in their angle of slope. Bees were less inclined to attach comb to the sides of a hive provided with top-bars, if the sides were sloping, irrespective of the angle of slope, but the distance from the top of the comb to the upper end of attachment increased with the angle of slope.

SummaryIn 1979 a comparison was made between pollens identified in samples of fresh nectar taken from 3 hives, and in the honey harvested from the same hives. Certain differences indicate the need for wider studies of the pollen analysis of such nectar, in relation to the assessment of the floral origin of honey from its pollen analysis. The data also indicate some pronounced differences in foraging patterns between the colonies.

SummaryVisitors to eastern Nepal who ate local honey suffered from symptoms of poisoning. Analysis of the honey showed that it was partly derived from aRhododendronspecies, of whichR. arboreumorR. campanulatumare reported to be predominant in the area. Grayanotoxins I, II and III were not found, but some other grayanotoxin analogues known to occur inRhododendronspecies were present at approximately 30 ppm. This amount could account for the symptoms of poisoning.

SummaryA high water vapour permeability is desirable for nest material, to discourage the growth of fungi. The water vapour permeability was evaluated of pine, moulded expanded polystyrene (EPS) and machine EPS, by calculating the loss of water from saturated wooden dowelling sealed in nesting tunnels in a block of the materials. Water loss was greater from dowelling at the side or end of blocks than at its centre, where it was 31·3% in pine and 7·1% in moulded EPS, per 24 h. For machined EPS of densities 16 kg/m3and 24 kg/m3, it was 20·0% and 13·7%, respectively.
