SummaryA single bee in each experiment was trained to walk to a syrup supply at the far end of a tube 1–3 m long outside an observation hive. The orientation of recruited foragers could be attributed to the scent of the food source and also (to a lesser extent) to the information provided by the angle of the dance performed.

SummaryLow- and high-speed airflows were forced through and across hive entrances to observe changes in the flight activity of honeybees. With hives having two entrances, more bees consistently entered their hives where a low-speed airflow was moving outwards, and departed where the airflow was inwards. A high-speed airflow parallel to the hive entrance hindered most bees from leaving, and stopped all bees from returning.

SummaryExamination of pollen grains with an optical microscope yields imperfect images, owing to the highly refractive properties and opaque character of the grains, and to the very restricted depth of focus. A preliminary report is given on the use of the scanning electron microscope for pollen analysis of honey. The images provide an extremely good representation of the surface texture of the pollen grains, and are characterized by a considerable depth of focus.

SummaryThe extent to which bees kept in wire-screen packages lost their legs under various conditions of light and temperature, and the effect of such loss on foraging and hive duties, were studied. Few basitarsi were lost when packages were kept in the dark at 13°C, whereas large numbers were lost at 21°when alternate light and dark periods were used. Regardless of which leg was lost, the weight of pollen collected was much reduced; there was no reduction, however, in the amount of nectar collected. Bees with one or other leg missing could perform most hive duties, except“dances”.

SummaryThe feeding responses of worker honeybees in their hive may be determined by inducing bees of appropriate physiological age to move to a feeding site above the combs where they are separated from the colony but able to return to it without hindrance. By this method it is shown that bees from combs of unsealed brood preferred pollen ofPrunus amygdalusto that ofEchium lycopsis. The bees were attracted to the solvent extract of pollen ofMelilotus albabut showed very little response to the residue left after extraction.

SummaryLow-survival larvae produced by two inbred queens were used to investigate whether a diet of royal jelly protected diploid drone larvae from being eaten by the worker bees. The larvae were hatched in an incubator, and one group was fed on bee milk and the other on royal jelly for 1, 2 or 3 days before being transferred to drone cells in a colony.Out of 689 larvae transferred 48·2% survived after one day in the colony, and 31·1% were finally sealed. Significantly more diploid drones in the groups left in an incubator for 2 days were sealed than in the groups kept there for 1 or 3 days, but there was no significant difference between the percentages of diploid drones reared and sealed in the groups fed on royal jelly and on bee milk. Royal jelly does not, therefore, confer any additional protection on the diploid drone larvae, and bee milk can be used equally well.
