SummaryFourteen small colonies were put into small hives and allowed to outgrow them. Four failed to do so before the last week of June, and these neither swarmed nor had occupied queen cells. The other ten had occupied queen cells and eight of them swarmed, all with their old queens; six had sealed queen cells and two had unsealed queen cells containing larvae. In one of the two colonies that outgrew its hive early but did not swarm, a young queen emerged and superseded the old one; in the other colony no queen cells hatched. The incidence of swarming, and of old queens in swarms, was greater than some other authors have found who used colonies with unrestricted hive space. Also, the amount of queen rearing associated with the swarming was greater than that found in an earlier experiment in which colonies were induced to swarm by sudden overcrowding. At least five of the present colonies that started queen rearing, including the one that replaced its queen and three of those that swarmed, destroyed the contents of queen cells at various times.

SummaryThe collection of alsike clover pollen by high alfalfa pollen collecting (APC) and low alfalfa pollen collecting lines of honeybees and by bees from commercial colonies were compared at Donnelly, Idaho, U.S.A., in an area where alsike clover was flowering. All three lines collected an overwhelmingly high percentage of alsike clover pollen (92–99%), and there were no significant differences between them. A limited amount of rape pollen was collected every day by all groups, and also a small amount of dandelion pollen on one or two days. Only one (high APC) colony collected pollen from a small nearby field of alfalfa, and only one (low APC) colony collected pollen from scattered patches ofSeneciospp.

SummaryA photographic-planimetric method was used to measure the corpora allata in honeybees of known age, including workers carrying out known activities, queens and drones, all reared under natural conditions.In workers the greatest increase in size occurred in the first 4 days; the subsequent decrease led to a minimum at an age of 7 days; the size increased again until 10 days, then remained more or less constant (to 21 days).There was no difference between the development of the corpora allata of fertilized laying queens (ligusticarace) 2 weeks old and 1 year old.The coincidence of the minimal size of the corpora allata with the maximal development of the hypopharyngeal glands suggests that the corpora allata may regulate the function of these glands.

SummaryHigh levels of ploidy are attained by larvae of the different castes ofApis melliferain spite of the fact that males develop from haploid cells and females from diploid cells. In the Malpighian tubules of drones the DNA contents and the nuclear volumes are often greater than in workers and smaller than in queens; the nuclear volumes in the silk glands of drones, similarly, are often less than in queens, though not in workers. This may be related to the biomass in drones being larger than in workers and smaller than in queens, with a resultant need for an adjustment of the amount of DNA present in the organs. The initial number of chromosomes is obscured by duplication of genetic material, giving different levels of ploidy.

SummaryIn a serious attack of the miteTropilaelaps clareaeonApis melliferacolonies at Ludhiana, India, up to 50% of the brood was killed in the late larval and pupal stages, and colony populations dwindled rapidly. Preliminary observations are given on the biology of the mite. Honeybee larvae are killed by the nymphs feeding on them, or (if attacked later) they develop into deformed adults which are evicted from the hive. A badly infested colony is left with practically no brood and it may abscond ultimately, the bees carrying the adult mites with them. After the mites have transformed into adults they remain just under the cell cappings and are exposed when these are removed. Terramycin and fumigations with chlorobenzilate did not give effective control, but a light dusting with sulphur every month controlled infestations completely.

SummaryA single application of Terramycin (Oxytetracycline HCl) was administered to honeybee colonies in a solid cake or patty. The patties contained sugar as a diluent and vegetable fat or petroleum jelly as a binder. The binder maintained the consistency of the patty (antibiotic extender patty) and controlled the feeding rate of the bees to provide an extended release of medicant for a period of more than two months. Antibiotic extender patties containing Terramycin in the dose rate described effectively controlled American foul brood in experimentally infected colonies. Doxycycline was less effective than Terramycin, and sulphathiazole was ineffective in this medium. Combination drugs containing Terramycin were as effective as Terramycin alone.

SummaryAdult worker honeybee faeces containingBacillus larvaespores were exposed to direct sunlight for periods up to a total of 600 hours. During this interval the number of spores capable of germination on artificial media decreased from an initial level of 1·8×105to 9·5×103spores per faecal spot. Infectivity of the exposed spores for susceptible honeybee larvae was not destroyed by exposure for up to 360 hours. Faeces voided by worker bees engaged in removal of spore-contaminated residues from the hive are therefore a potential source of infection in the dissemination of American foul brood disease.

SummaryThe amino acids present in Australian honey fromEucalyptus macrorrhyncha, E. camaldulensisandTrifolium repenswere examined by column- and paper-chromatographic methods of separation. All three honeys contained the same 16 amino acids; with a few exceptions, these were the same as the amino acids that have been found in honey in other countries. The use of two solvent systems enabled more amino acids to be identified.
