摘要:
SUMMARYMagnetic resonance (MR) microscopy was used to record MR images of the internal structure of drone and queen honey bees,Apis mellifera carnica, in vivo.A home built MR microscope operating at 270 MHz was used to produce images of honey bees with an in-plane resolution of 30μm×30μm from a slice 440μm thick. Honey bees were immobilized by placing them inside a glass tube and cooling them down to around 10°C. MR images of sagittal and transverse cross-sections through head, thorax and abdomen of the drone, and a sagittal image through the abdomen of the queen are presented. A number of internal organs of the drone such as: the brain, oesophagus, thoracic ganglion, aorta, testis, spermatic ducts and mucus gland were identified. In the queen image, the ovary, midgut, spermatheca, vagina, sting cavity, rectum and air sacs are clearly visible.

摘要:
SUMMARYReducing the duration of the length of the capped brood phase is considered to be a good approach for breeding honey bees resistant toVarroa jacobsoni. In cross-fostering experiments using six colonies ofApis mellifera carnica, in addition to the genotype of worker brood, the nursing colony also affected the duration of the postcapping stage. Regression analysis of postcapping duration on precapping duration showed that the relationship was negative and highly significant (b=−0.05,P<0.001), so that a shorter postcapping stage was partly compensated for by a longer precapping period. The ratio between postcapping and precapping periods was significantly affected by genotype of worker brood (P<0.001), by effects of the precapping nurse colony (P= 0.008) and by effects of the postcapping nurse colony (P<0.001). The duration of the precapping and postcapping stages and the inverse relationship between them was shown to have a genetic basis. The results show that the nurse colony has an important impact on the duration of the postcapping stage and this should be considered in selection programmes.

摘要:
SUMMARYComplete descriptions using a variety of measurements are provided for nests ofApis andreniformisfrom south-eastern Thailand, Sichuan and Hunan Provinces of China, and Palawan, Philippines andApis floreafrom southeastern Thailand and Hunan Province of China. Overall, the single-comb nest ofA. andreniformishas a very different structure from that ofA. florea. The comb built byA. andreniformishas a midrib both above and below the supporting branch. However, the comb built byA. floreahas a mid-rib only in the brood area below the supporting branch. The honey storage mid-rib ofA. andreniformisnests gives them a characteristic crown appearance. Other differences include the overall size of the nest, the width and depth of worker cells and the width of drone cells.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe relationship between the amount of pollen consumed and vitellogenin (Vg) and juvenile hormone (JH) titres in the haemolymph of Africanized honey bee workers (Apis mellifera) was studied. Analysis of haemolymph from young workers fed on diets differing in pollen content revealed that Vg, but not JH titre, is dependent on pollen consumption. Workers fed on a 50% pollen diet had higher Vg levels than workers fed on a 15% pollen diet. A 0% pollen diet severely impaired the increase in Vg titre normally observed during the first days of adult life. However, the quantity of pollen in the diet was not reflected in the measured JH titre, which was not significantly different in bees fed on the various diets. The results are discussed in terms of regulation of Vg synthesis.

摘要:
SUMMARYDDVP (o,o-dimethyl-o-(2,2-dichlorovinyl) phosphate), an organophosphate insecticide and esterase inhibitor was applied to 5th-instar larvae and pre-pupae ofApis mellifera, to determine whether the esterase isoenzymes are essential for normal larvapupa transition. After treating larvae with 20μg DDVR we observed severe or total inhibition of activity of esterases Est-2, Est-2a, Est-3, Est-4 and Est-5. Only Est-1 activity was unaffected by this treatment. Nevertheless, all treated larvae transformed to prepupae and the prepupae-pupae transition and subsequent pupal development were followed by the recovery of Est-2, Est-3, Est-4 and Est-5 activities. However, the transition to pupae did not occur when prepupae were treated with DDVP. Electrophoretic analysis of prepupae after treatment showed that, except for Est-1, which was insensitive to DDVP, and Est-2a, which was not inhibited fully, the remaining esterases (Est-2, Est-3, Est-4 and Est-5) were inhibited permanently. A close correlation between recovery of isoenzyme activities and normal progress of development was observed. The possible causes of this developmental phase-specific sensitivity are discussed.
