摘要:
SummaryPloidy levels in honeybee larval fat-body nuclei were examined to test the hypothesis that differential replication is involved in the initiation of caste dimorphism. Ploidy levels as high as 256C were demonstrated in larval queen fat-body, but no differences in ploidy were detected before 72 hours of larval life, indicating that differential replication is not involved in the initiation of caste differences.

摘要:
SummaryA relationship between the pH of the spermathecal fluid and the age ofApis melliferavirgin queens was found. When the queens were 5 days old the pH was 9·7 and it is at this age that mating flights start. It is suggested that spermatozoa migrate to the spermatheca by chemotoxis, due to the difference in pH of the semen (7·) and spermathecal fluid. Coconut water, pH 7·, was a very good preserving agent and diluent ofA. melliferasperm.

摘要:
SummaryA method for directing the traffic flow of honeybees at the hive entrance, and counting bees electronically, was developed. It achieves maximal separation of incoming and outgoing bees without using inhibitory devices that could bias activity. The counter samples at the entrance and exit alternately, concurrently recording other data. The data may be retrieved manually or interfaced with a digital counter or computer.

摘要:
SummaryHoneybee colonies moved at night into new territory had smaller increases in weight than similar undisturbed colonies during the 7-day period following the move. Colonies moved out and back during the same night showed no such reduction in nectar storage. The difference was presumably the result of a need to reorientate to new pasture. Colonies moved in late autumn (November) showed a significantly greater winter consumption of stores than those not disturbed; those moved twice showed still greater consumption. Each move resulted in an additional consumption of 4–5 kg stores per colony between October and April.

摘要:
SummaryThree honeybee colonies were placed in each of 3 fields of alfalfa. One field was sprayed with carbaryl and one with monocrotophos; one was untreated. Both insecticide treatments killed bees; carbaryl residues were found in trapped and stored pollen and in honey, but monocrotophos only in trapped pollen. The foraging ability and size of the colonies were apparently not affected.

摘要:
SummaryMarked drones (25 diploid and 22 haploid) were released in a colony, and observations on the duration of their flights were carried out for 5 hours per day on 8 days between 19th May and 5th June. Twenty diploid drones left the hive but only 5 returned, whereas 11 haploid drones flew and all returned. The 5 diploids which returned made a total of 13 flights, varying between 10·5 and 55 minutes in duration (mean 26·3±15·18 min); the 11 haploide made 17 flights (range 4·0–30·0 min, mean 15·0±6·73 min).

摘要:
SummaryWorker honeybees entering and leaving the hive had surface electric potentials that followed a daily rhythm, with a peak at midday or in the early afternoon. Bees entering the hive were normally positively charged, the potential above earth (ground) varying between 0 and +1·5V. Bees leaving the hive had a more uniform potential, normally slightly negative early in the day, becoming slightly positive as the day advanced. The magnitude of all potentials was dependent in part on weather conditions.

摘要:
SummaryWorkers in queenright colonies with brood showed little ovary development; there was pronounced development in samples of workers (21–22 days old) from queenless broodless colonies, rather less development in workers from parts of queenless colonies separated from brood by single or double wire-mesh screens, and even less development in workers from queenless colonies with direct contact with brood. Many eggs (which ultimately gave rise to adult drones) were laid by workers in the broodless, queenless colonies containing used brood combs. No obvious differences were found in the various developmental stages between drones from eggs laid by workers and drones from eggs laid by queens. Results forA. c. indicawere fairly similar to those available forA. mellifera.

摘要:
SummaryThe investigation was conducted on the India plains variety ofA.c. indica. The queens flew between 13·30 h and 15·30 h, and mating occurred between 14·00 h and 15–00 h. The mean duration of a successful mating flight was 27 minutes, and a queen mated with an average of 10 drones on one flight. The mating sign is formed of a twisted and compressed thread of solidified mucus, surrounded by sticky orange membranes. After one mating flight a well mated queen had 1·5–3·0 mm3(average 1·9 mm3) semen in the oviducts, and a young laying queen had a mean 1·3 million spermatozoa in the spermatheca.Queens instrumentally inseminated twice with a total of 6 mm3semen had on average 1·4 million spermatozoa in the spermatheca. Queens inseminated twice with a total of 4–6 mm3laid only fertilized eggs for one year; observation of such queens for a longer period is desirable.

摘要:
SummaryUnder the subtropical climate of Ribeiräo Prêto, Brazil, the relationships between age and survival in worker bees were studied withApis melliferaand a stingless bee (Plebeia droryana), using 3 colonies of each. In contrast to colonies in the temperate region, winter workers ofA. melliferadid not show a prolongation of life span. A marked prolongation was observed in workers of two broodless colonies ofP. droryana, one queenless and the other not, compared with a normal brood-rearing colony. In the normal colony, workers changed activities in relation to age as they do inA. mellifera, but their mean life span was much longer.
