摘要:
SummaryQuantitative chemical and microscopical analyses of the food of drone honeybee larvae were carried out every day after hatching. The food for larvae aged 5–6 days contained much sugar, less protein and many pollen grains compared with that for larvae aged 1–3 days. Results for the fourth day were transitional. The food of older larvae was inferred to consist of a small amount of pollen and a 1: 2 mixture of honey and of the food of young larvae.

摘要:
SummaryGluconic acid was found to make up about 25 % of the total water-soluble acid content of both royal jelly and worker jelly. When freshly collected royal jelly was kept at 35°C, there was an increase in its acidity, an uptake of oxygen, and an evolution of hydrogen peroxide. It is concluded that part of the gluconate is producedin vitroby a glucose oxidase system secreted by the hypopharyngeal glands of the nurse bees.

摘要:
SummaryPollen mixtures placed in the brood nest of honeybee colonies in proximity to brood of known ages disappeared (and were presumed to have been consumed) most rapidly when they were near unsealed brood. Consumption was greater near older larvae than near sealed brood. Pollen supplement placed above honey combs adjacent to brood was also consumed, but more slowly.

摘要:
SummaryThe morphology of the genitalia, and the mating behaviour ofApis cerana indicafrom Peshawar, Pakistan, are described. The morphology of the vagina of theA. ceranaqueen, in particular the open val vefold, makes instrumental insemination easier than inA. mellifera. In the drone, both the quantity of semen and the concentration of spermatozoa in it are lower than inA. mellifera. In the seminal vesicles about 1·5 million spermatozoa were found per drone, and in the ejaculated fluid about 1·0 million per drone. One queen, dissected immediately after a second mating flight, had a quantity of semen in the oviducts corresponding to that from 14 drones, so on both flights together this queen may have mated with some 30 drones. A mating sign was observed on newly mated queens, but it lacked the chitinized plates found inA. mellifera. It is concluded that, to ensure full insemination,A. ceranaqueens must mate with more drones than is necessary forA. melliferaqueens. Evolutionary trends in the genusApisare discussed.

摘要:
SummaryAltogether 301 haploid and 428 diploid drones originating from 33 queens were reared. More than 9500 measurements or counts were made on different reproductive organs of these drones, which were killed on their first day of adult life. The mean length of the testes of haploid drones varied from 4·61 to 5·45 mm, and the mean volume from 1016 to 14·27 mm3. Significant differences were found between different parts of reproductive organs of haploid drones originating from different queens. The testes of diploid drones are surrounded by well developed fatty tissue. The mean length of testes of diploid drones originating from different queens varied from 1·81 to 3·44 mm, and the volume from 100 to 416 mm3; the variations in diploid drones were thus much greater than in the haploids. The mean testes volume of haploid drones from a given queen was commonly 10 times as great as that of diploid drones from the same queen. The diploids had about half as many of testicular tubules as the haploids, and their vesiculae seminales and mucus glands were 85–95% the size of those of the haploids. No consistent differences were found between the sclerotized plates of the reproductive systems of haploid and diploid drones. The mean dimensions of various reproductive organs of diploid drones originating from different queens differed significantly. The small size of the testes of diploid drones, one of the factors that make it difficult to collect their semen, might therefore be ameliorated by selective breeding.

摘要:
SummaryA component of propolis has been identified as 4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid (ferulic acid). It was found in the course of the systematic investigation of the chemical composition of propolis, using UV, IR and NMR spectrometry and paper and thin-layer chromatography. The isolation and identification of the compound are described, and reference made to its pharmacological activity.

摘要:
SummaryTen forager honeybees from Caucasian and from Cordovan mutant Italian colonies in a wire-screen flight cage were marked, and conditioned to collect sucrose solution placed above petri dishes scented with citral or geraniol. Recruits from colonies conditioned to citral alone or to geraniol alone were attracted to the training scent in greater numbers when it was presented alone than when in combination with the other scent; very few were attracted to the other scent alone or to the unscented dishes. A large number of recruits from a wild-type Italian colony conditioned to citral + geraniol were attracted to dishes with the combination of scents and fewer to dishes with a single scent. Recruits from the same colony were not attracted to any of the scented dishes while its foragers were conditioned to gather sucrose from an unscented training station.
