摘要:
SUMMARYColony behaviour in queen replacement was studied for months in 6½months in 10 colonies of honeybees. Traps attached to colony entrances collected dead queens. The pattern of queen replacement was found to be extremely variable, and the data indicate: (1) that neither swarming nor supersedure necessarily follows maturation of queen cells; (2) that one or more queens may be reared and rejected before swarming or supersedure occurs, if it does at all.

摘要:
SUMMARYQueens producing scattered brood were obtained by sibling mating for two or three generations. A total of 33 521 individual observations, together with counts of 9634 eggs and larvae, were carried out on the brood these queens produced. Only about 50% of the brood normally survived. But when the eggs were screened and left in normal conditions in the hive, or kept in favourable conditions outside it, nearly all of them hatched. The hatchability of eggs of these queens was in fact similar to that of eggs laid by queens producing normal brood.Counts made every three hours on brood of low survival rate showed that these eggs also hatched when left unscreened in the hive, but that a high proportion of thelarvaedisappeared within the next few hours. In a parallel study with brood killed by freezing, dead larvae in the hive disappeared very quickly, but dead eggs could remain up to 5 days. Brood of low survival rate seemed to disappear more quickly than normal brood, so the homozygosity of locus X does not cause the eggs to be lethal.

SUMMARYThese two ecdyses were studied in detail by observing larvae and prepupae placed individually in specially designed transparent capsules. The observations, made under a binocular microscope, are described for all three castes. Observations were also made on ecdyses under natural conditions.

摘要:
SUMMARYExperiments were carried out on the transport of honeybee eggs, larvae, pupae and semen, separate from adult bees and therefore without danger of transmitting any adult bee disease from one continent to another. Various techniques were devised and tested with the help of collaborators in a number of countries, and successful methods established.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe visitation rate of honeybees on alfalfa may possibly be measured by determining the sugar concentration of nectar in the honey stomachs of foraging bees. This concentration is shown to be largely controlled by the relative humidity and the time available for nectar evaporation in the alfalfa blossom, which in turn depends on the rate of visitation by honeybees. An adjustment for relative humidity may be necessary in order to compare readings widely separated in time or location. Where conditions are relatively constant from day to day, it may be sufficient to measure the nectar sugar concentration and relative humidity at the same hour each day. In one experiment a highly significant correlation coefficient of−0·867 was obtained between the number of tripped flowers per raceme and the nectar sugar concentration; in another experiment a non-significant value was obtained.

摘要:
SUMMARYA detailed description is given of a controlled-environment flight room for the study of bee behaviour both in and outside the colony. Experiments demonstrated the ability of a colony to collect pollen, sugar syrup and water in the room, and to rear brood normally, increasing its strength throughout 1½months in spring. The behaviour of bees collecting powdered pollen from a tray 30 ft. [10 m.] from the hive was influenced by the amount and distribution of light in the room.

摘要:
SUMMARYExperiments are described which show that the level ofNosemainfection was satisfactorily reduced by feeding colonies in October with Fumidil B (but not with Nosemack). Other experiments show that syrup containing fumagillin, fed to colonies in the fall and overwintered in the colony, was effective the following summer in reducing the level ofNosemainfection in caged bees.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe inhibine values of 25 honeys were diminished or destroyed by the action of catalase. All the honeys had a‘peroxide value’as determined iodometrically; this was destroyed by the action of catalase.
