Current models used to analyze the thermal performance of cooling towers assume that the air/water interfacial temperature is equivalent to the bulk temperature of the water, or, in other words, that the liquid-side film resistance is negligible. This assumption is a possible source of the dependence on inlet hot water temperatures found in cooling tower packing heat and mass transfer correlations derived from these models. For applications in which the water temperatures exceed the limits of experimental data used in developing such correlations, a resulting high level of uncertainty exists. This article describes a method by which one-dimensional cooling tower model equations can be corrected to account for liquid-side film resistance. The use of these corrected equations in the development of temperature-independent heat and mass transfer correlations for tower packings is also described.

摘要:
The advantages of designing heat exchangers in the laminar-flow regime are discussed from a theoretical standpoint. It is argued that laminar-flow designs have the advantages of reducing thermodynamic and hydrodynamic irreversibilities, and hence increasing system efficiency. More concretely, laminar-flow heat exchangers are free from the turbulence-induced vibration common in conventional heat exchangers, and can thus offer longer life and greater reliability.

Chemical Engineering Department, Jordan University, Amman, Jordan A tubeless solar collector charged with Refrigerant-113 (R-113) was installed and tested. Steady-state performance of this system showed high efficiency values; this was due to phase-change heat transfer characteristics of a boiling process that is accompanied by low plate temperature as well as low thermal resistance to heat flow from the absorber plate to the working fluid. The only resistance to heat flow toward the working fluid is the conduction resistance through the upper plate, which is negligible.

摘要:
Synthesis of cost-optimal shell-and-tube heat exchangers is a difficult task since it involves a large number of parameters. An attempt is made in this article to simplify the process of choosing the parameter values that will minimize the cost of any heat exchanger satisfying a given heat duty and a particular set of constraints. The simplification is based on decoupling of the geometric and the thermal aspects of the problem. The concept of curves for cost-optimal design is introduced and is shown to simplify the synthesis process for shell-and-tube heat exchangers.

Particular attention is placed on describing recent developments in heat transfer enhancement on the refrigerant side for evaporation and condensation applications.
