Early in 1989 a workshop was held in Oxford, UK, to prepare a core curriculum for post‐basic cancer nursing programmes in Europe. Workshop participants were experts in cancer‐nursing education from all over Europe, and were working in response to one of several recommendations made in a report to thead‐hocWorking Group on Training in Cancer of the Advisory Committee on Training in Nursing of the European Commission (ACTN). The core curriculum was published in 1989, and formed the basis for a Consensus Conference held in 1991, where some minor amendments led to this revised edition. This edition received endorsement from the ACTN in April 1991, and has now been translated by the European Commission for use throughout the member states. The aim of this article is to review the literature on the diary method and describe its use within the context of a nursing research project. The author utilized the diary method when investigating the experiences of individuals after cranial radiotherapy. The diary provided a suitable method for eliciting the experiences of participants. Data from the diaries provided the basis for semi‐structured interviews and produced a descriptive account of the phenomenon of somnolence syndrome. Lymphoedema is a chronic, progressive condition that may occur as a primary condition, or secondary to disease. In the case of lymphoedema arising as a result of cancer and its treatment, there has been wide variation in the type and extent of intervention offered, and limited research into the efficacy of different techniques. This has contributed to inconsistent and often inappropriate management of the condition. In the absence of conclusive research, an understanding of the physiological changes that occur in lymphoedema has been used latterly as the basis for planning treatment. As a result, there has been increasing interest in a combined programme of conservative techniques aimed at reversing these changes. Research data suggest that this approach is proving more successful. This article considers the combined programme, and other techniques, in relation to their potential for reversing altered physiology and restoring normal function.

The difficulties experienced by nurses working in a home‐care programme for advanced cancer patients have been studied. Three assessments of patients and their families at strategic points in the programme highlight issues in symptom management and in the physical and psychological impacts of advanced cancer on the study sample. The purpose of this article is to describe what it is like to live with cancer from the perspective of the family: to explore the challenges that families face when a member has cancer; to consider how families influence the experience of the person diagnosed with cancer; and to describe how families cope with a cancer diagnosis.
