The text of this paper was originally presented to the RCN Cancer Nursing Society Conference which was held in June 1993. It was written in response to a request to cover the topics of informed consent, ethics and the multidisciplinary team and living wills. Clearly, this is an extremely broad range of topics so, in order to introduce some coherence into the paper, the ‘Tuma’ case is used to connect the themes of cancer nursing, informed consent and working in a multidisciplinary team. The topic of living wills and its parent concept, that of advance directives, constitute a particular aspect of informed consent. Community health care and, more specifically, home health care are major developments over recent years. In many European countries there has been serious debate on the necessity of home care, the importance of this type of health care for the patient and family, and those factors influencing patient choice with regard to health care at home or in hospital.This question of choice between home and hospital care forms the basis of this piece of research, the aim of which is to examine the biosocial factors that influence the decision of cancer patients in Greece to choose health care at home or in hospital.

The holistic care of patients with malignant melanoma requires psychosocial intervention. This paper provides an argument in support of this, based on research findings, clinical experience, demand and implications for the future. Strategies for providing psychosocial support are outlined with emphasis on a coordinated multidisciplinary approach, specialist nursing contributions and self‐help. An unknown number of patients are at risk of developing lymphoedema following treatment for cancer. In recognition of the need to coordinate and standardize methods of assessment and treatment, and to improve the quality of life for patients with lymphoedema, a hospital‐based lymphoedema service was established. As part of a major study of the impact of childhood cancer on Chinese families, 17 families agreed to be interviewed after the death of their child from cancer. They convey what happens to the child's body after death and what remembrances the family has kept of their child's belongings. They share how they have adjusted and what they would like other parents who have a child with cancer to know. A picture emerges of what it is like to have a child die from cancer in China.
