The ICCB is one of the most intensively serviced buildings in the UK. The reason is the extraordinarily varied range of uses specified for the building. The description of the electrical services given here shows the scope and variety of the electrical engineering content of a modern, highly serviced building.

Recently, environmental degradation has emerged as a serious problem that further complicates the major energy issues that arose in the 1970s. This article examines electricity related environmental issues in the developing countries, that will increasingly shape the future role of the power engineering profession. The growth related power needs of the Third World and their financial implications, the potential for better energy management, the financial mechanisms and policies that can improve the performance of developing countries power utilities, and the treatment of environmental impacts will be explored.

The paper was presented as the keynote address to the First All Africa International Symposium on Lightning, co-sponsored by the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers and the IEE. Thunderstorm activity in most of tropical Africa greatly exceeds that in industrialised countries, and lightning thus becomes a special problem for the tropical areas of the developing world of today. While research over the past years has produced many statistics, facts and theories concerning lightning phenomena, which are reviewed in the paper, it also reveals many gaps and unknowns which must be taken account of in interpreting existing data. This leads finally to what in the author's opinion are the priorities for future lightning research especially in the context of Africa.

This series of three tutorial articles is intended to create a general awareness of power system reliability and the factors affecting it, to unveil some of the mysteries that prevail with regard to reliability, to indicate the underlying concepts concerning its assessment and application, and to show how it relates to economic constraints. This first article considers the general background and the assessment of generating capacity. The second and third articles will be published in later issues of the Journal.

Electron beam processors have advanced a long way since the early scanned beam systems associated with radiation research and radiography. ‘Curtain’ beam equipment is today used in a wide range of industrial processes such as printing, magnetic media manufacture and the crosslinking of plastic film and wire insulation. The first part of this two-part article, in the May 1992 issue, described the technology that has been developed to deliver beam currents of as much as 1000 mA at accelerating voltages of up to 300 kV. This second part discusses the diverse applications of such processors.

Modern light rail rapid transit is gaining in popularity and the right power supply equipment is important for the reliable operation of any railway service. This article reviews the design process and equipment supplied to achieve this goal for the Manchester Metrolink. The depth of work and design methods employed to arrive at adequate but cost-effective equipment ratings is presented along with an insight into some of the forward thinking, which has been employed to cater for future requirements.
